President Bush will likely cast the first veto of his presidency if the Senate, as expected, passes legislation to expand federal funding of embryonic stem-cell research, White House aide Karl Rove said today.
"The president is emphatic about this," Rove said in a meeting with the editorial board of The Denver Post.
The U.S. House of Representatives has already passed the legislation, co-sponsored by Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Denver, and Rep. Mike Castle, R-Del. If the Senate approves the bill this month it would go to the president's desk.

Actually, I support action against North Korea, but at least I'm not a hypocrite about the "sanctity of life".
And I don't favor "killing the innocent" because there is NOTHING to kill! See how you religious creeps distort the argument? It's only "killing the innocent" because you ignorantly claim that a few cells of proteins and DNA is "innocent life". It's not life.
Though I don't hold out much hope on that score because if it isn't evident to you that your cheek cells are never going to become anything but cheek cells until the SLTD takes over, things are just not looking up on that score.
I never mentioned religion Mr Lunatic. You been drinking?
Because I don't believe in your silly God?
I love how you religious-right people label those of us who don't believe in your myths as 'leftists'.
What action would that be?
I take it then that you disagree with the Constitution of the United States and the Declaration of Independence which both sanctify life by declaring it is an unalienable right.
You have absorbed your leftist professors' theology well.
Congratulations on your deep faith.
No, I do not disagree with it. Where you and I disagree is what is human life. I do not believe an embryo, which is simply 2-8 cells of proteins and DNA, is a human "life". It is simply the result of a chemical reaction between a sperm and an egg, also called a zygote. A zygote BECOMES a human life after 8 weeks when it forms into a fetus.
There is no "left" or "right" in this area. You make a theological argument in an area of science, and attach it to a political belief. That makes you a person that supports a theocracy, and no better than the people your son and my brother fight against.
Lunatic doesn't believe in God. His God is his science. So be it. He'll never be convinced otherwise so just let him be. I completely disagree with him but that's ok.
When my son was born, i flashed back to a conversation with my now wife where we discussed a potential abortion. I was appalled at myself that I had even considered snuffing out his life, whether he was scientifically "viable" or not.
To each his own Lunatic.
More leftist theology coming through.
Your faith is strong.
He just has faith in man and not his Creator.
I agree, however, that there is no point in continuing this discussion. Until he becomes aware of how much his religion dominates his thinking and destroys his ability to reason, nothing will be accomplished.
Apparently the only "reason" in your argument is hyperbole and fairy tales. Care to defend your position that a few strands of protein is "human life" that must be defended at the cost of the lives of actual living human beings?
The bill/law mentioned says nothing about the destruction of embryos except those that were going to be destroyed anyway.
I think we agree to a certain degree. I don't know if I'd use the word "worst" in an absolute sense though, but perhaps in the context of the three or four arguments presented in your post.
Here's what I mean: venture capitalists invest millions of dollars for long-term big payoff projects, and certainly not every breakthrough in technology has come through massive infusions of taxpayers dollars. Why should ESC be any different than the non-taxpayer funded research?
I think we both agree ESC research is a slippery slope, as it destroys a human life--and a human life should not be a commodity.
"I think it is worth raising the point that adult stem cells have been proven to have medical uses, and fetal stem cells have not, even though the latter have been more heavily funded and every left-winger in academia is eager to push it."
I agree with everything you said but this - over the years, embryonic stem cells have received only a fraction of the overall funding that adult stem cells have... but that is largely because it is a new field...
How many votes are needed to override a Presidential veto and is it likely to be overidden(I hope not)?
Sure it does... if you're a student of Josef Mengele... disgusting.
