Tobacco may kill 1 billion this century

WASHINGTON - If current trends hold, tobacco will kill a billion people this century, 10 times the toll it took in the 20th century, public health officials said Monday.

Tobacco accounts for one in five cancer deaths, or 1.4 million deaths worldwide each year, according to two new reference guides that chart global tobacco use and cancer. Lung cancer remains the major cancer among the 10.9 million new cases of cancer diagnosed each year, according to the Cancer Atlas.

Reducing tobacco use would have the greatest affect on global cancer rates, health officials said. Improving nutrition and reducing infection by cancer-causing viruses and bacteria could also cut rates dramatically, they said.

"We know with cancer, if we take action now, we can save 2 million lives a year by 2020 and 6.5 million by 2040," said Dr. Judith Mackay, a World Health Organization senior policy adviser.

The new Cancer Atlas and updated Tobacco Atlas were released Monday at a International Union Against Cancer conference. The American Cancer Society published the two atlases with help from the Union, WHO and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Even if smoking rates decline worldwide, there will be a constant or even slightly increasing number of smokers due to population increases," said Michael Eriksen, director of the Institute of Public Health at Georgia State University.

An estimated 1.25 billion men and women smoke cigarettes now, according to the Tobacco Atlas.

Pure Propaganda!

If what Mr. Bridges writes were true, everyone who ever smoked would die of lung cancer.

The answer is obvious.

Sounds like there would be one hell of a huge market force for coming up with a CURE FOR CANCER. From the rumors I hear, some people who never smoke still get cancer.

I'm telling you... it isn't tobacco. It's water. It is the only real common thread amongst EVERYONE who has ever had cancer.

I guess we should ban cigarettes from using handguns...you know...those pesky inanimate objects just keep on a killing without remorse or regret.

SIGH...personal accountability is becoming a lost art.

If current trends hold...

As a general rule, you can safely ignore anything that follows this statement.

Is this not the same organization that believes in abortion on demand and cries overpoplulation every chance they get?

Ban Water.

And also ban air and food, both these subtances will show a substanially higher death total for users in the 21st century compared to the 20th. Also, 100 percent of people born will surely die unless we can come up with some solution to the being born problem!( The pro-choice people are working on that one as I type!)

No, no. If everybody quits smoking right now, we will all live forever. If anyone does die, it will be peacefully in their sleep at age 800 or so. Smoking is the devil..................Got a light.

Thank all you smokers in advance for your tax dollars!

Actually I get "free" health care if I get any smoking related disease according to the "settlement". So I guess I get some of money back /sarc.

Personally, I despise cigarettes. I also despise the government telling me whether I can or cannot smoke. Is it dangerous - yes, but so is obesity and driving down the interstate. Are they going to outlaw those as well?

I thought Global Warming was going to cause the Polar Ice Caps to melt and we were all going to drown when the oceans rose and inundated the major land masses as in Kevin Costner's "Water World"? That would greatly reduce the amount of tobacco available wouldn't it?

Give them time. Between the likes of Ralph Nader and the Fat Police, they are working on it.

No, not at all. You can rebuild and otherwise fix up the Camaro and chicks will dig you. Junk Science goes on almost forever and 'Bondo' won't stick to it.

I hear ya.. there is only so much habitable and tillable land available unless you build up and not out or use advanced growing techniques, hydroponics, etc..

This must be making the Zero Population Growth folks ecstatic.

Pls tell me more about this free health care for smokers, my brother needs it now. He tries to hide his persistent cough but it's really nasty.
