At 17, Leo Valle was dazzled by the money and other perks that came with service in the National Guard. So in March, the South St. Paul resident signed up to join.
He soon had second thoughts.
Valle's parents, who had given their written consent, didn't want him to go. His girlfriend was against it, too. When Valle saw a video about the rigors of basic training, he decided he had made the wrong decision. "I didn't want to do it anymore," he said recently. "They yell in your face and you take orders."

Thank you for your service.
My oldest son spent 24 years in the National Guard. He told me that boot camp was the best thing that ever happened to him. Most likely it would be the best thing that could happen to the 17 year old recuit from St. Paul.
At ease, Gunny. Be nice to the other branches, or they won't let us into the nice clubs at Kadena and Yokosuka - leaving our troops stuck with Schwab and Fuji. Remember on which side your beer is iced.
Snicker, snicker. Army basic. Snicker, snicker.
Now, now...none of that..
God bless all those who serve. No disrespect intended.
I know Gunny.....my large military family serves every branch....I love em all!
"They yell in your face and you take orders."
Wait till he gets his 1st job.
BWAAAAAAAAAHA HAAAAAAAA HAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!
ROTFLMFAO!!!!! He looks afraid of a liberal photographer's camera!!!!
Gee, after all these centuries, FINALLY a guy has second thoughts about joining up.
I knew this day would come. I just didn't expect it so soon.
Oh, and it goes without saying: Cry me a river.
Must be a slow news day.
"They yell in your face and you take orders."
Yeah, and sometimes they'll make you get up REAL early - even if you're in the middle of a really good dream!
And just forget about Happy Meals!
Sheesh, he looks like he just wants to go drown his sorrows in a McDonalds shake and borrow some money from dad to put a ground effects package on his honda.
Good Gosh, no kidding.
Has there EVER been someone in the military who DIDN'T have second thoughts at SOME point in their tour of service?????
They have better welfare benefits in the northern tier of states...
Heck, just send him packing to Canada....
When I went to Navy boot camp, we had a kid who literally spent the first two weeks bawling. Not crying, not whimpering, but wailing out loud constantly. He'd stop for about ten minutes and then he'd start up again. When we got our hair cut, he was crying. When we got our inoculations, his bald head broke into hives so bad he looked like a sniveling Darth Maul.
They finally sent him to the discharge barracks and separated him as "Unfit for Military Service."
