Chechen rebel leader Shamil Basayev - dubbed the Beast of Beslan - has been killed by Russia's security forces.
The radical Islamic leader was behind the Beslan school siege in which hundreds of people, mostly children, were killed.
Basayev, 41, together with other Chechen fighters, was killed in Ingushetia, a region neighbouring Chechnya, in an operation by Russian special forces, Russia said.
President Vladimir Putin said Basayev's killing was "deserved retribution".
"This is deserved retribution against the bandits for our children in Beslan, in Budennovsk, for all these acts of terror they committed in Moscow and other Russian regions, including Ingushetia and Chechnya," Mr Putin said.
FSB head Nikolai Patrushev said Chechen rebels were planning an attack in southern Russia to coincide with the Group of Eight summit later this week in Russia, which Mr Putin is chairing.
He indicated other countries may have been involved in the planning the attack on Basayev.
More than 331 people, half of them children, were killed in Beslan after Russian forces tried to end a siege of the school which had been seized by Islamist militants linked to Chechnya's fight for independence.
More than 100 people were killed in 1995 when Chechen rebels seize hundreds of hostages at a hospital in Budennovsk.
BTTT
If you get the chance, watch "Three Days In September" on Showtime. It is an excellent documentary on the muslim butchery of innocent children in Beslan. I guarantee you won't have any sympathy for the ragheads after watching this, even if you dislike Russians.
GOOD!I hope a considerable amount of SUFFERING was expeienced by this ANIMAL!!Everine should read Ralph Peter's article in The NY Post about what a HUGE mistake we are making in taking prisoners in this WAR!!!"Club Gitmo"should be closed, but ONLY for this reason!!!!!!!
There are actually still people out there who have sympathy for Muslims? Wow, slow learners huh? I'm not a big Russian fan. I just don't trust them. However, they did go out and get their man. I admire them for that. I hope they keep up the good work.
I wasn't taking a shot at you - at least, not intentionally. I didn't know you had been among the Putin skeptics.
Russia has hardly been a staunch ally in the WOT, but it's always good to see rough justice meted out to terrs.

I recall the terrorist would not allow the children a drink of water during the three days.
I suspect the Beast who organized this attack, will spend eternity in thirst.
We will get Osama also...

retribution schmetribution, they neutralized a threat.
There is no pain in the afterlife. Basayev was completely successful in leaving pain, suffering, and evil in the world. He won. Islam won. There is no justice.
There prayers have not been answered. The children are dead, the agony of the world is greater, and evil won. There is no justice and no reason why anyone would want to be born into this world.
No victory. There millions more like him just getting ready. There is no hope for humanity.
Thanks :)
