There were some key comments in this failure. "2007" and "there was a sense of collective will that we will see the program of action implemented".
It ain't over until we get "Us out of the UN and the UN out of the U.S."

"They've squandered an opportunity to save thousands of lives." Who is she kidding? Gun control led to the deaths of millions during the 20th century.

Glad they can't get the ball rolling on this. The UN is evil and terribly inefficient.

The meeting failed because so many countries (France) want a UN tax on handgun manufacturing (US manufacturers that is) versus actually controlling illicit small arms sales (AK-47s and RPGs) which are the weapons that are truly causing harm in the world.

They've squandered an opportunity to save thousands of lives. That's just standard operating procedure for the UN. "Hey, look, outside our safe UN camp, there are locals being beaten and raped. Good thing those guerrillas aren't inside doing that to us. Anyway, are the cameras set up for our native-child porn shoot?"
To: lrb111
Well, at least it didn't end in gunfire . . . .
. . . that's how this sort of headline generally reads . . .

And, this is different from any other day..., how?
Most other days they don't work hard and get no results.

CORRECTION: They've squandered an opportunity to take guns away from law abiding citizens while doing nothing to take guns out of the hands of the bad guys..

"The conference was held behind closed doors, and diplomats refused to speak to the media."
Asa gun owner and TAXPAYER I demand that these overpain beaurocrats open these meetings to the public. I want to know how my dollars are spent.
As for the failure of this meeting... I'm hard pressed to think of anything I would qualify as a UN success.

"The UN program, while voluntary,. . ." Oh, you mean like the gazillion other 'voluntary' programs that wind their way down to every municipality in the country and become local laws and statutes?
NGO's -- just doing the work that true Americans refuse to do.

My son has an AK, I don't think they should be outlawed. As far as that goes, I'd like to have one myself.
