BERGEN TOWN'S MAYOR CALLS BILLBOARD 'DIVISIVE'

The mayor of a small Bergen County town is calling for a McDonald's boycott if the fast-food chain does not take down a Spanish-language billboard advertising iced coffee.

Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan said the advertisement is "offensive" and "divisive" because it sends a message that Hispanic im migrants do not need to learn English.

Kids will eat pretty much what their parents have taught them to eat. My son always insisted that he take his own lunch. Said it tasted better and he didn't have to wait in line.

Look at it this way, see how the multiculturalism and dual language standard has damaged Quebec.

Notice we don't hear as much as we did for decades about the animosity? That's because the english speaking shoppers have probably been driven out of the french sections.

Got to Miami, there are a lot of large areas where if you don't speak spanish, you are completely SOL. I wouldn't go to those areas without my daughter, who happens to be fluent in spanish.

There is a lot more to this than "marketing". It may well be that in many areas, the majority of the spanish speaking being appeal to are illegals. Last time I looked, the Colt 45 billboards were directed at American citizens.

No, FRiend, my comments are those of an educated right-winger who is tired of Know Nothing Party rhetoric interfering with legitimate debate about border security.

"But why is it that when the rest of the world is moving toward English, the United States is moving toward Spanish?"

It isn't.

What you have here is a whole bunch of newly arrived immigrants being catered to by business in their native tongue.

It's always been done that way.

Then, as the original immigrants die off, their monolingual descendants settle into English.

Have you ever found a second or third generation descendant of an immigrant who DOESN'T speak English, and is not able to speak their ancestors original language?

You won't find one because there aren't any to be found.

I can prove that by simply pointing to everyone in the US who is not a newly arrived immigrant.

The whole "these immigrants are going to ruin this country" thing has been going on for a LOOOONG time.

Here's an example:

"I am perfectly of your mind, that measures of great Temper are necessary with the Germans: and am not without Apprehensions, that thro' their indiscretion or Ours, or both, great disorders and inconveniences may one day arise among us; Those who come hither are generally of the most ignorant Stupid Sort of their own Nation, and as Ignorance is often attended with Credulity when Knavery would mislead it, and with Suspicion when Honesty would set it right; and as few of the English understand the German Language, and so cannot address them either from the Press or Pulpit, 'tis almost impossible to remove any prejudices they once entertain. Their own Clergy have very little influence over the people; who seem to take an uncommon pleasure in abusing and discharging the Minister on every trivial occasion. Not being used to Liberty, they know not how to make a modest use of it; and as Kolben says of the young Hottentots, that they are not esteemed men till they have shewn their manhood by beating their mothers, so these seem to think themselves not free, till they can feel their liberty in abusing and insulting their Teachers. Thus they are under no restraint of Ecclesiastical Government; They behave, however, submissively enough at present to the Civil Government which I wish they may continue to do: For I remember when they modestly declined intermeddling in our Elections, but now they come in droves, and carry all before them, except in one or two Counties; Few of their children in the Country learn English; they import many Books from Germany; and of the six printing houses in the Province, two are entirely German, two half German half English, and but two entirely English; They have one German News-paper, and one half German. Advertisements intended to be general are now printed in Dutch and English; the Signs in our Streets have inscriptions in both languages, and in some places only German: They begin of late to make all their Bonds and other legal Writings in their own Language, which (though I think it ought not to be) are allowed good in our Courts, where the German Business so encreases that there is continual need of Interpreters; and I suppose in a few years they will be also necessary in the Assembly, to tell one half of our Legislators what the other half say; In short unless the stream of their importation could be turned from this to other colonies, as you very judiciously propose, they will soon so out number us, that all the advantages we have will not in My Opinion be able to preserve our language, and even our Government will become precarious." -- Source

This thing we call "The Melting Pot" is too overwhelming for any one set of immigrants to avoid.

Most of the people coming here have no interest in re-colonizing.

I would not come to conclusions on the majority of Mexican/Hispanics in the country based on the actions of a (small) percentage of idiots, any more than we should allow people to categorize all Americans based on the actions of Cindy Sheehan and her ilk.

Didn't you mean to say illegal immigrants?

It's always been done that way.

Not anywhere near this degree.

If there is pressure to speak English people will do so, but that pressure is becoming less and less.

Gee Luis, I looked and looked but didn't see Cindy and her legions shutting the streets of every major city in America a few weeks ago chanting over and over for their cause but I sure did see hundreds of thousands of Mexicans doing so with their own flags along with their brethren from the Communist Workers Party et al.....now who do you think represents a bigger threat to our country's stability?

It has had an effect on my shopping habits since our local Ace is a lot more fun to shop in, and Home Depot is right around the corner.

Home Depot has done it too. I'd say stick with ACE and let them know why.

I have no problem with Spanish billboards, but that having been said, it seems weird that the rest of the world wants to learn English, as it has become the lingua franca of the world, and yet these people are fighting tooth and nail against having to learn English.

What really pees me off is that last month, in Georgia, I got a speeding ticket that was printed in one language: SPANISH.

I'm fighting that like the dickens!

I left the site for a while, that's when I changed the homepage; the song that's posted there says a lot as to why I left.

I'm still a Bush supporter, there are things that I wish he would have done differently, but not enough to make me change my mind one bit about supporting him.

If I had to take to the streets again tomorrow, like I did (along with so many others) to make sure that his electoral victory wasn't stolen, I'd do it in a heart beat.

I don't count illegal aliens, they're not supposed to be here.

McDonald's will also tell you that their signs are not there for illegal aliens.

You however, probably believe that every immigrant who speaks Spanish in this country, is in this country illegally.
