Pakistan to build and sell submarines in the international market

Karachi: Pakistan Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has said that the country may become self sufficient to build its own submarines and sell them in the international market.

He said Pakistan Navy was building the Agosta submarines with French assistance, and had acquired the technical skills to build and market them at a later stage.

"We are focusing on the Naval facilities on ground, water and air so that PN is modernised and made effective with adequate firepower, defensive and offensive capability. Pakistan has now acquired the technical skills to build the submarine and can market it at a later stage," the Nation quoted an APP report as saying.

He said Pakistan was acquiring new frigates from China and Europe and the construction of the Agosta submarines and transfer of technology for the frigates had put the country on the road of self-reliance, reports The News.

“Pakistan must not allow this opportunity to be lost. The construction of Agosta submarines and transfer of technology from frigates are the steps in this direction,” he added.

So Pakistan now claims it can take a 40 year old submarine design and copy it. Quite an achievement for them.

Umm,there is a big difference between Agosta Class(over 30 years old) & the Agosta 90B(decade old design). The Latter which Pakistan is building is more automated & advanced than the latter & has AIP(so about 8-10 times more endurance).

There are not exactly copying-license building it.

This is a great idea.

I have visions of these Paki craft floating above and below the Great Lakes. Perhaps sailing down the St. Lawrence River.

There will be many dealers in Florida who will find sales of these vessels much more lucrative than selling Chris Craft, etc.

There's a Yugo plant under construction in Pakistan right now.

"Smells like trouble!!"

Yep, I can see it now; long lines of buyers arguing about get's them first, and who gets more than the others.

Pakistan has a per-capita GDP of $2400.

Economic disaster that it it, Cuba's is actually 46% higher. Even Iraq, with a war going on, is 42% higher.

I would suggest that there might be better places to focus the nation's energies than building antique submarines for desert countries.

Pakistan has now acquired the technical skills to build the submarine...

Yeah, sure.

They don't even have the technical skills to make a decent pocketknife.

I don't think Pakistan can hold the tolerances for this type of work. Quiet is the name of the game with subs, and quiet means advanced materials and very advanced manufacturing techniques. I do not believe that country can produce a quality quiet submarine.

Having a noisy one is quite useless against the US, Russians and allies.

I agree. Pakistand has zero manufacturing capabilities and I would not trust a chair made by them. The infrastructure there is 4th world and there is no way they can hold the tolerances and actually make a submarine that would be operational. All of the Islamic world is a barbaric backwater that would still be in the 7th century if it were not for the West's technology. If Indians and Americans left the Middle East, tomorrow the whole place would shut down, they can't make a pen on their own.

Umm,first of all, this sub is not DESIGNED by Pakistan. It's a license built copy of a French design.Meaning, the French will supply the technology & the training for technicians.Pakistan has to do little rather than build it & ofcourse, pay for it!!

Unlike what many folks think, these subs are quieter than more most N-subs & what makes them dangerous is their air independent propulsion units, which vastly increase their underwater propulsion.

Before you folks jump on the French,I must add that Pakistan also operates American sub-harpoon missiles which it would almost certainly try to integrate to these boats.

The overcrowded population might be better off if their government built a few central sewer systems.

The Pakis can build "jingle trucks" but not much else.

If this is true then it means trouble. I doubt we have the technology for air independent propulsion. And I think the Agustas would be more advanced then our indigenously produced HDW subs. We need the Scorpenes and the ATVs fast.

Half the country is completely uncontrollable, but they have can build and sell subs.

Makes about as much sense as their enforced religion.
