LA officer hurt, several arrested during anti-immigration rally

An officer was injured and several people were arrested during an anti-illegal immigration march involving the Minuteman Project and other groups Saturday evening in Hollywood, police said.

One female officer suffered a minor injury, apparently to her ankle, after clashing with protesters, said Officer Sandra Escalante, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department.

KCAL-TV footage showed counter-protesters along the sidewalks shouting as anti-immigration demonstrators, including members of the Minuteman civilian border patrol group, marched along Hollywood Boulevard.

Escalante said several people were arrested, though it wasn't immediately clear if they were part of the anti-immigration march or the counter-protest.

Police estimated the number of marchers at 200 shortly after 7 p.m. The march began at Hollywood Boulevard and Argyle Avenue, Escalante said.

Messages left with the Minutemen were not immediately returned.

I'm not counting Chris Simcox out yet...the backstory on this is long and convoluted and he did boot out a few thugs himself. The last thing we need is letting the FROBLs divide and conquer those who oppose them. Simcox, to me, has always come across as a straight up fellow whose primary agenda was to stop illegal immigration. If these recent allegations that he's using the fence project to enrich himself prove true have at him. Until then don't sentence him before a hearing.

Personally, I've supported Gilchrist because of his excellent record and touring the nation to drum up support.

All I did was answer another FReeper's question with one word. Doesn't imply anything on my part. I have not informed myself re this controversy going on about the different MM groups.

So, maybe you meant to respond to someone else?

On the other hand, the Minutemen were part of a 4th of July parade in Pacific Palisades, a REALLY upscale seaside neighborhood and these same thugs showed up to harass them. I know, I was there, I saw it all up close and personal. Most of the Zapatistas were masked by bandanas, shouting, banging their drums, etc.

The Minutemen had kept this low-profile ahead of time, I thought. But the thugs find out about it and come out in force.

The good thing was that plenty of LAPD were deployed to control the goons and protect the Minutemen.

You raise an interesting point about not going into Hollywood. But aren't the Minutemen Americans and aren't they protected by freedom of assembly? Should they suppress their own rights out of fear and give in to the intimidation tactics of the anarchists?

By the way, many of these Minutemen are black Americans native to Los Angeles, to the "inner city."

"But aren't the Minutemen Americans and aren't they protected by freedom of assembly?"

I said I supported their right to go anywhere.

And I suggested they intended to be provocative by picking this area. I don't oppose that either.

By provoking the illegal advocates, they get them to act up on film. It doesn't do the illegal advocates any good to wave foriegn flags, or to incite/commit violence, particularly when it gets captured on film.

I understand the demographic differences between Pacific Palisades and Hollywood (which is next to pockets of Salvadorans, other illegal immigrant concentrations, etc.).

If they pick areas like this, a Minuteman may get badly hurt.

Sounds like excessive force was used. A clear case of illegal alien brutality.

I totally agree with your last line, and I worry about it.

Because, as I said, I saw these thugs in action for myself and it was ugly and threatening.

I saw a news clip awhile ago of all the Hollywood goings-on and there was a lady carrying an SOS (Save Our State) sign who had fallen to the sidewalk, being assisted up by a friend. Was she pushed?

You are correct. There is potential for violence in these situations. And, unfortunately, right or wrong that ends up meaning court dates for everyone.

Hey Enchiladita! Question for you.....aren't there laws against wearing masks/bandanas at these kinds of things. I could have sworn that there were.

I've been told there is also something else that is troublesome concerning how some donor lists were sold.

I haven't had time to do any digging on that. I think selling or sharing donor lists is common, so I don't know why this might be a problem.

Here's another link that has has Simcox describing what has been built and aerial pictures of the actual fence:

http://www.americanpatrol.com/ABP/PHOTO-OF-THE-DAY/060622.html

The video link in #32 by the Phoenix local news affiliate interviews volunteers upset at seeing huge amounts of money come in (millions) not being used for border issues. Simcox sits there, and is totally busted.

Gilchrist is no longer associated with Simcox. If you are going to donate, it would be wise to make sure it is the Gilchrist faction, who now are the 'official' MM.

Escalante said several people were arrested, though it wasn't immediately clear if they were part of the anti-immigration march or the counter-protest.

Yes, Ms Escalantem spokeswoman for LAPD - it must have been impossible to tell which was which./BIG SARC

KCAL-TV footage showed counter-protesters along the sidewalks shouting as anti-ILLEGAL immigration demonstrators, including members of the Minuteman civilian border patrol group, marched along Hollywood Boulevard.

Escalante said several people were arrested, though it wasn't immediately clear if they were part of the anti-ILLEGAL immigration march or the counter-protest.

It was abundantly clear from news footage that it was the pro-illegal "counter-protest" side causing the trouble.

I almost went to the Palisades parade. Now I am sorry
I didn't. I would have liked to support our MM. Those thugs would really stand out up there, but in Hollywood, it seems they could run into not just supporters for the illegals, but also gangs. I do admire the MM protesting there tho'. It shows their courage and committment. It would be a bit scary though and next time I hope this is coordinated as much as possible with the LAPD. They more than anyone know how nasty these gangs/thugs are.

Your right . Who really cares what anyone thinks of simcox or whomever. This is about American citizens getting together for a peaceful march. This was held in Hollywood , it is a tourist mecca , where thousands of people from all over come to have fun. According to some this is another area we should aviod . Nonsense . Let the light shine on these Knuckle dragging thugs. If you think this is the end of their attempts at intimidation , think again. They are for the most part illegals and therefore criminals , trying to keep others from exercising their rights.

I agree 100%. If we allow Law Abiding citizens to be intimidated then they have won. Screw um!
