Arkansas - Rockefeller Bone Marrow Transplant Fails
Associated Press (excerpt) ^ | July 8, 2006 | Peggy Harris

Excerpt -

Lt. Gov. Win Rockefeller returned home to Arkansas on Saturday after a second bone marrow transplant for a life-threatening blood disorder failed to produce encouraging results, a spokesman said.

Rockefeller, 57, returned to Little Rock from Washington state, where he had the two transplants for a condition that can lead to leukemia, his spokesman Steve Brawner said.

"His attitude is still good and he is still looking for a way to beat this disease and return to his good life and noble work," Brawner said.

Brawner would not elaborate on Rockefeller's current physical condition.

Any Freeper medical personnel out there that can tell me how long bone marrow can be stored?. Could someone have their bone marrow frozen for future possible use?

Wiki gives the following:

Autologous bone marrow transplantation involves isolation of HSC from a patient, storage of the stem cells in a freezer, medical treatment of the patient that destroys stem cells remaining in the body, and return of the patient's own stored stem cells to their body

My question is how long can the transplantation sample be kept in the freezer?

How does someone with a condition that COULD lead to leukemia get two bone marrow transplants?

Myeloproliferative disorder? (sp?)
Er, sounds a lot like leukemia/lymphoma/myeloma type stuff.
I am going to guess here that the cells could be frozen for several years without the efficacy being lost.
(My brother in law had stem cell/bone marrow tx 4 years ago, and he is supposed to have his own cells on hold at the hospital)

I used to give platelets to cancer victims that only the Red Cross knew the identity. Two others and I were matched to a patient. Then about once a month I would donate platelets. Interesting experience. I kept that practice up until I moved west.

Lily, did you find the procedure more complex than giving whole blood?
Just curious.

Not necessarily complex but more time-consuming. However, it gave me a chance to get out of work for couple of hours. :) Red Cross rep informed me that I had good platelets.

Isn't he Jay's brother? Could this disease be inherited?

They're cousins. Win is the only child of Winthrop Rockefeller. Who is Jay Rockefeller's father?

Jay Rockefeller's father was John D. Rockefeller, III (1906-1978).

I have type I diabetes. Can I still donate blood, platelets, or plasma? I've always been under to impression to not even ask until now.

Besides my fasting and post-prandial BGs, my blood has treated me well! For instance, I scab almost instantly after injury, which I believe is platelet-related.

Platelets are the substance in the blood that makes clotting. Leukemia patients blood lose that ability. So if you're blood clots that's a good sign.

Prayers for Mr. Rockefeller.

Although his surname is identified with a not so liked wing of the Republican party, I wouldn't wish my worst enemy the battle he is now facing.

You know, I dont know. I would think that you would be ok, I asked my MD one time if I could donate and he said *I dont know* ! And he is a very smart guy....
(Oh, I have severe asthma and allergies, and a family hx of diabetes.)
What kicked me out of the pool is my high heart hate. 100 or higher, they wont let you donate.
My hr runs in the family.
Best of luck to you! :-)
