Bomb tunnel, flood city
New York Daily News ^ | July 7, 2006 | ALLISON GENDAR & JAMES GORDON MEEK

The FBI has uncovered what officials consider a serious plot by jihadists to bomb the Holland Tunnel in hopes of causing a torrent of water to deluge lower Manhattan, the Daily News has learned. The terrorists sought to drown the Financial District as New Orleans was by Hurricane Katrina, sources said. They also wanted to attack subways and other tunnels.

Counterterrorism officials are alarmed by the "lone wolf" terror plot because they allegedly got a pledge of financial and tactical support from Jordanian associates of top terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi before he was killed in Iraq, a counterterrorism source told The News.

It's not clear, however, if any cash or assistance was delivered.

The News has learned that at the request of U.S. officials, authorities in Beirut arrested one of the alleged conspirators, identified as Amir Andalousli, in recent months. Agents were scrambling yesterday to try to nab other suspects, sources said.

They didn't indicate how many people were the target of the international dragnet but said they were scattered all over the world.

Those crazy terrorists! If only we understand them better, then we wouldn't have these problems.

If they were followers of Al Gore, instead of Al Queda, they would know that Manhattan will be underwater anyway in about 50 years.

The person who leaked the investigation is "clearly someone who doesn't understand the fragility of international relations,"

could that be NYT?

It is my understanding that a lot of the subway system there is below sea level. The PATH train runs to places like Madison Square Garden which has several levels of subways/trains. A breach under the river would therefore flood a lot of the system.

They should have devoted their efforts toward sinking some glaciers - causing oceans to rise to dangerous levels and sinking Manhattan!

I guess the water was supposed to shoot up into the sky like an oil well under pressure. So much for the education in physics you get at a madrassa. And they were planning all this in an open chat room! So they must be pretty dumb!

What was really disturbing about the news article was that it said that these guys were arrested as part of an "ongoing investigation." Isn't the Daily News sort of letting the other guys involved KNOW when they print in on the front page?

I was thinking the same thing. Since water seks its own level certaily they could flood the part of the tunnell that is underwater, however the water would stop at sea level once it was reached. Perhaps the initial rush of water would create a surge of some sort but certainly it wouldnt flood Manhattan.

Yeah, but the subway system isn't connected to the Holland Tunnel. And the tunnel itself is under bedrock. So their plans to drive a car full of explosives into the walls of the tunnel wouldn't do much.

Maybe if they had a large enough explosion, they could flood the tunnel itself. But it wouldn't have any effect on the subways. And since Manhattan itself is above sea level, the water would never make it to ground level.

NYC isn't quite Amsterdam, after all.

Didn't the prophet (pig pieces be upon him) say something like "If Manhattan will not come to the Hudson, then let the Hudson come to Manhattan"?

They are secretly manufacturing millions of pounds of R12 and planned to release it into the atmosphere.

This would in turn rip the ozone hole wide open, causing massive pant wetting by liberals and econuts.

The ensuing washing of soiled clothing would cause all the sewers to back and "Voila", a Noah like flood (at least according to the Bill Cosby's routine).

Clever, fiendish, smelly little buggers.

How does this "bomb tunnel, flood city" thing work? Is the tunnel some sort of dike? Or has Bernoulli been abrogated?

"Bomb tunnel"? "Flood the city"?

Say it ain't so. There must be a mistake?

It must be the Islamist simply wanted to "Flood the city with 'Love'."

Yeah, right!! See my tag.

Well, it's simple really, the tunnel goes under the river,
break through and all that water comes rushing in and
floods wall street. What's so hard about that?

This wasn't the only plan by the way, they also had a plan to blow up the Chunnel and flood London and Paris!!!
