NEW YORK, July 3 (Reuters) - A New Jersey appellate court rejected a plea by casinos to stay open despite a shutdown of non-essential government services, Dan Heneghan, a spokesman for the Casino Control Commission said on Monday.
"The appellate division denied the relief that the Casino Association had requested," Heneghan said. "I understand they will now try to get relief from the New Jersey Supreme Court. Absent that and absent the state budget, the Casino Control Commission chair ordered all gaming will have to cease as of 8 a.m. on Wednesday."

Just when we thought the lawmakers couldn't get any dumber. This is ridiculous!I want this to be as painful as possible. I don't care what happens in New Jersey, the state is a lost cause.
However, we have a potent issue that we can use in swing states this election.

Ahh...the peoples republic of new jersey!! a few more incidents like this and the state will be in the hands of republicans.

The casinos closing is the only silver lining in this fiasco. Maybe all those poor people will take a walk on the beach and get some fresh air for a change.

Don't feel bad. It's uphill in New Jersey, and, where I am it's worse (Michigan).
But it IS getting better!
Keep on, brother! To paraphrase Churchill (Winston, not that other one). "It's not the beginning of the end, but it is the end of the beginning."

Technically, but if i recall correctly, the northern states like to call their dems republicans and their mental patients democrats.

Contrast New Jersey's stalemate with California's first on-time budget in over 6 years without increasing taxes.
Certainly the leadership in New Jersey is lacking. To Governor's position of "my hands are tied" is just an excuse for "I can't make the hard decisions for budget cutting and holding the line on taxes".

In the past, government shutdowns indirectly hurt businesses by causing a reduction in the number of customers coming in (such as a sandwich shop in front of a federal court house). This situation in New Jersey is new and troubling. Because government cannot get its act together, private businesses are not even able to open.

I wonder if the MSM will let on that the whole deal is because Corzine decided to brak his "promise" about raising taxes, and will not rest until the "promise" is broken.
More likely, they will talk about the shortsighted Republicans that are trying to help him keep his promises...

I suppose this is an innocent's question, but if the state's shut down, what's to prevent the casinos from opening?

Yes it is. But I do not blame the pols. They take advantage of the people and the people continue to elect them.

Me too. Isn't it great? You want a Dem controlled legislature and a Dem governor? Now you have both. Deal with it.
To: Grut
I suppose this is an innocent's question, but if the state's shut down, what's to prevent the casinos from opening? Obviously the state is not really shut down. The only thing Governor Corzine has done is padlock the things people like and sent home all the no-show jobbers and the Department of Redundancy Department employees.
The things the Governor cares about are still in operation.

Someone mentioned on another thread that the casino's have to have a state gaming employee on site in order to operate.
To: Vaquero
Just like BlowJobBilly's government shutdown.......the dirty little secret is that everyone can operate just fine without the government.....including the casinos. But we wouldn't want that fact to get out.
