MEXICO CITY — With more than 90% of an official recount concluded late Wednesday, leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador held a slim lead over conservative Felipe Calderon in Mexico's fractious and unpredictable presidential election.

The partial result was a surprising turnabout after two days of preliminary counts showed Calderon slightly ahead. The initial tally at the 131,000 polling places that began Sunday night was deemed too close to call.

On Wednesday, officials undertook the final count based on a review of polling station reports. With 94% of the polling stations tallied, Lopez Obrador led Calderon by 0.73 percentage point, or about 288,000 votes.

Representatives of Lopez Obrador's Democratic Revolution Party said the reversal was caused by the discovery of thousands of votes for their candidate that had gone uncounted in the preliminary tally.

At counting centers across Mexico, they demanded that individual ballot boxes be opened for recount. Although Calderon representatives objected, many boxes were opened and the votes tabulated

I know this sounds fishy... but votes get lost all the time and are always found in time to reclaim an election for the losing candidate.

The LA Times is full of it and trying to set up things to look like election fraud. The conservative will win. They're still doing the official count as we speak. The most conservative areas have yet to be counted. Look at the live election thread (just a few down on breaking news) and you'll see what's going on.

I do not think they are going to waste their time going over there. If you noticed, there were not any international observers monitoring the voting stations.

I'm sick of these liberal rags passing themselves off as legitimate newspapers. If they were honest, the main part of their story wouldn't talk about any turnabout, because there has been NO turnabout. It's just a matter of geography and what areas they've been counting first in the real count.

I know the LA Pravda is making it look like voting fraud. But its fun watching the LA Pravda planting the seeds of doubt.

Not Breaking News.

The Breaking News is that Calderon is regaining the lead. The appropriate thread nearing 550 posts is this one:

Sorry, my mistake, the live update thread isn't on breaking news (I thought it was; it's another Mexico election story thread). The live update thread is here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1660852/posts
