'Nobody Is In Favor of the War,' Mayor Says Before Backing Down

BY JILL GARDINER - Staff Reporter of the Sun July 5, 2006 URL: http://www.nysun.com/article/35463

Mayor Bloomberg offered some insights yesterday into his thoughts on the Iraq war, declaring, "Nobody is in favor of the war" - a remark that a spokesman later clarified, explaining that the mayor supports the war.

"We all want to find a solution to this war," Mr. Bloomberg told reporters before marching in the annual July Fourth Parade on Staten Island.

During last year's mayoral campaign, Mr. Bloomberg's Democratic opponent, Fernando Ferrer, needled him over his position on the Iraq war.

Yesterday, before marching through a neighborhood of homes decorated in red, white, and blue, Mr. Bloomberg said, "there are no easy answers" to the war. But, he said having Congress consider a "meaningless resolution" that says America needs to withdraw the troops at "some point" or a resolution specifying a date to end the war is not the way to go. He was referring to proposals recently rejected in Congress.

"I've said before I don't know what I would have done had I been president" and was faced with the decision on the war, Mr. Bloomberg, who has been the subject of speculation as a potential candidate for the White House in 2008, said.

"I've said repeatedly I don't think that fixing a date is something that is practical. You can't have your soldiers over there fighting and dying where the enemy knows that all they've got to do is outwait them and build up public pressure by killing more of them," Mr. Bloomberg, who was wearing red Bermuda shorts in honor of the holiday, said.

It's debatable whether this country will fight for anything. Back in the 60's, I listened to leftists proclaim that they'd fight if the country was attacked, but they wouldn't fight in Vietnam. This time, the country has been attacked, and they still won't fight. We've gone a very long way downhill since World War II.

NY and NJ: the last remaining habitat of the dwindling cud-chewing herds of Pleistocene North American liberals.

I've also noticd how the left that was telling us only two years ago during J Effin K's campaign that the 'real fight' was in Afghanistan are now openly clamoring for buggering out there as well.

Like the 60's, this is also partly the administration's fault for not aggressively proecuting the seditionists, traitors and leakers of classified info to the fullest extent of the law.

Jail some of them and go after their assets to recoup the costs of the betrayal and see how long rich liberals like the Sulzbergers will continue to break the law.

I'm still waiting for the prosecutions, but I'm not holding my breath. And the law breaking has been open and brazen.

What do you expect from a life long DEM, who longs to tell everyone what they can eat, when they should go to bed, over indulges his own children, and is ruining N.Y.C.?

I listened to leftists proclaim that they'd fight if the country was attacked, but they wouldn't fight in Vietnam.

That's why they believe all the conspiracy theories--'cuz it would reveal them as the craven bastards they are if they admit America actually was attacked.

Quite simply: Psychological defenses are stronger than reason....

Yeah, I'm not holding my breath either. And I don't want hear more nonsense about how I am supposedly trying to 'stifle free speech'. I'm only advocating prosecution for what people do (disclose or unlawfully obtain classified info, block military shipments, etc.), not what they say. It is every American's right to march up and down a public way making an a$$ out of himself.

This is a matter of wartime leadership, where Bush could at least speak plainly (like Howard in Oz) and call an idiot an idiot or a defeatist a defeatist. His criticisms of the Times was a day late and a dollar short.

And while the Iraqis are asking for an independent inquiry into allegations of atrocities by small numbers of Us soldiers, where's the reciprocity? Where is Bush asking the Iraqi's to deliver up the animals in Fallujah or the dogs responsible for the barbarities committed against the two captured US soldiers?

Any republic is founded on a certain political solidarity in the mass of the people: if the President in wartime doesn't act forcefully to support it, who will, and when?

Pretty wild speculation, if you ask me.
