FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 05, 2006
CONTACT: Brendan Daly/Jennifer Crider 202-226-7616 Pelosi to President: Where Have You Been the Last Five Years on Border Security and Immigration?
Washington D.C. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement responding to President Bushs remarks this morning that he finally plans to get around to enforcing laws against employers who hire illegal immigrants and exploit workers:
"The American people and Democrats strongly support enforcing current laws against employers who hire illegal immigrants and exploit them. After five years of unparalleled neglect, the Presidents assertion today that he finally plans to get around to enforcing immigration laws is almost laughable.
"Mr. President, where have you been the last five years while your Administration failed to secure the border and enforce immigration laws?
"Rather than addressing the President and their partys failure on border security and immigration, House Republicans today are holding the first of several field hearings on an issue on which they do not have a single accomplishment.
"Democrats propose a New Direction on immigration. We believe it is long past time to focus on tough laws, actually implement them, hold the Administration accountable for enforcing them, and pass comprehensive immigration reform."

Immigration Facts
Republicans Enforcement Failures Border enforcement and immigration enforcement have fallen drastically under the Bush Administration and the Republican Congress. In 1999, the United States initiated fines against 417 companies for hiring illegal immigrants. In 2004, the Bush Administration issued fine notices to only three companies.
Democrats Enforcement Efforts Democrats have long called for strong border security, effective law enforcement, and for comprehensive immigration reform. Democrats have proposed fully implementing the 9/11 Commission recommendations, and seven times over the last four and a half years, have offered amendments to increase resources.
* If these Democratic amendments had been adopted, there would be 6,600 more Border Patrol agents, 14,000 more detention beds, and 2,700 more immigration agents than now exist. Each time, these efforts have been rejected by House Republicans.

Gross hypocrisy mixed with insane stupidity. And that is being kind.
Nancy aint got a leg to stand on. The Democrats are just as bad as republicans in this farce.
Mr. Bush has indeed been lax in supporting our borders, but the democrats are supporting amnesty.
Nancy dear: If you cant do better than this you should STFU.
LOL! Bashing Bush While Supporting Bush - does this deserve syndrome another subsection under "BDS" in the DSM? Pelosi's in the pocket of the cheaper labor lobbies. If not, she doesn't have the guts or smarts to take on Democrats in the Senate.
"Pelosi to President: Where Have You Been the Last Five Years on Border Security and Immigration?"
Pelosi is a lying hypocrite, but guess what? She is 100% correct.
If the GOP doesn't make her the face of the 2006 elections then they need better consultants.
She's testing the waters.
Sadly, the inaction of the GOP and its leaders in this area have given the Democrats ammunition that will certainly be used in the upcoming elections.
Many here on Free Republic have called frequently for improvements on immigration issues. Those calls have gone unheeded.
You can expect more of this to come, whether it is justified or not.
As negligent as the President has been on securing our borders since taking office, I haven't seen Nancy Pelosi or the rest of the marxist party doing a single damned thing about border security since then either. Instead of her usual Botox shots, she needs a nice big syringe full of STFU administered stat.
And, Bela Pelosi, your plan is where? Perhaps you should get John Kerry (he served in Vietnam) to help you with a plan.
"Pelosi is a lying hypocrite, but guess what? She is 100% correct."
Yes, she is. But she doesn't know how to exploit it.
I think it was paralleled very nicely in the previous eight, actually.
That goes double for me.
What was that issue that the Dems were going to use to overthrow the GOP in November? I can't remember now. Apparently neither can crazy Pelosi if she thinks that anti-immigration voters are going to turn to the DNC for support.
A better question for both of them is "Why aren't you doing anything about it now?"
Nyah, it's just the "Broken Clock Syndrome" with her.
