Church anti-Semitic
Jesus had something to say about such hypocrisy

I accuse a segment of the United Church of Canada of anti-Semitism.
This is not an accusation to be made lightly.
Last week, the UCC's Toronto Conference proposed an anti-Semitic resolution to be debated at the UCC's big convention next month. The resolution demonizes the Jewish state as the cause of the problems in the Middle East, and calls for the church not to buy or invest with Israeli Jews.
No punishments are proposed for any Arab terrorist groups.
The resolution also endorses the recent Canadian Union of Public Employees statement which goes further than just blackballing the Jewish state. That CUPE Ontario resolution demands Israel open itself up to millions of Arabs from around the world to resettle there.
According to CUPE Ontario -- and now the Toronto Conference of the UCC -- Palestinians should have their own country in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. And they should also have Israel as their country, too, by simply moving in millions of Arabs.
This is not a half-measure, like an economic boycott of the Jews would be. That just hurts the Jews -- those greedy, money-grubbing Jews -- in their pocketbook. But by endorsing the call for the Arabization of Israelproper, the UCC would finish off the Jewish state altogether, not just make it poorer.
Is it, by definition, anti-Semitic to criticize the Jewish state? Of course not, no more than it is racist to criticize South Africa or China.
But it is not hard to distinguish between good faith criticisms and anti-Semitic ones.
Israel has its flaws. But for the UCC to zero in on Israel's flaws and to ignore the far more egregious flaws of its neighbours and enemies -- well, that can only be explained by a bias.
Palestinians don't just exist in the Israeli-controlled West Bank. They exist by the million throughout the Arab world, in squalid conditions that would make Ramallah look like Monaco. Where are the sanctions against Jordan, Lebanon or Syria? Where are the sanctions against the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, which denies basic civil rights to Palestinians?
Israel, in a state of war with its neighbours and facing an existential terrorist threat, has implemented security measures that sometimes step on personal liberties -- as we do more mildly here in Canada, such as our airport searches. For the UCC to magnify and condemn the relatively minor inconveniences that Israel causes Palestinians, while completely ignoring the fact Palestinians in the rest of the world are treated far more abusively is discriminatory.
If the UCC was truly interested in the well-being of Palestinians, it would equally condemn other Arab countries.
But only the Jews come in for excoriation and economic boycotts. Jesus had something to say about such hypocrisy: "Why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, But considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?"
The national UCC has engaged in a good cop/bad cop routine with their Toronto Conference.
The national UCC claims to be more moderate, but still whitewashes Palestinian terrorism, paints the Jews as the guilty party and calls for economic punishments against them. Their official economic boycott resolution, proposal GS2, has a few perfunctory lines about Israel's right to exist. Then the UCC calls for sanctions against the Jews anyways.
How the mighty UCC has fallen. When their last moderator, Rev. Bill Phipps, announced he didn't believe Jesus was God, it was time to realize the UCC isn't about Christianity anymore, it's about left-wing politics.
Too bad for the Jews that now means 1930's Germany-style economic boycotts. May this anti-Semitic church's membership continue to plummet.

PING!
From now on, then, no UCC people will be allowed to swim across Huron or Erie. [grin]

Literally, it means unreasoning hatred of semites, and things semitic. Semite/semitic being a language group that includes aramaic, hebrew and arabic. This would thus include Arabs.
However, in accepted usage, it means hatred of Jews, Judaism, things Jewish.
Heads up ping.
Thank you very much for the explanation, however, If antisemitism in its worst case is considered to be a mere 'sin', why is it also considered a blunder in politics?
