Copycatty Coulter Pilfers Prose: Pro
NY Post ^ | July 2, 2006 | PHILIP RECCHIA

Posted on 07/02/2006 5:26:36 AM PDT by publius1

Conservative scribe Ann Coulter cribbed liberally in her latest book, "Godless," according to a plagiarism expert.

John Barrie, the creator of a leading plagiarism-recognition system, claimed he found at least three instances of what he calls "textbook plagiarism" in the leggy blond pundit's "Godless: the Church of Liberalism" after he ran the book's text through the company's digital iThenticate program.

He also says he discovered verbatim lifts in Coulter's weekly column, which is syndicated to more than 100 newspapers, including the Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Sun-Sentinel and Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle.

Barrie, CEO of iParadigms, told The Post that one 25-word passage from the "Godless" chapter titled "The Holiest Sacrament: Abortion" appears to have been lifted nearly word for word from Planned Parenthood literature published at least 18 months before Coulter's 281-page book was released.

A separate, 24-word string from the chapter "The Creation Myth" appeared about a year earlier in the San Francisco Chronicle with just one word change-"stacked" was changed to "piled."

Another 33-word passage that appears five pages into "Godless" allegedly comes from a 1999 article in the Portland (Maine) Press Herald.

Coulter did not respond to requests for comment.

Nope. But if they're lying then it's kind of stupid of them since it's such an easy lie to disprove. If their claims are false then the truth will come out.

Stupid lies are the modus operandi of the left...They know that, no matter how false, if a thing is put out into the media, it will be believed more than any valid refutations afterward........and for anyone to lend their allegations credence up front, before researching the veracity or waiting for more evidence - they "aid and abet" - innocently or not.

It hasppens in Universities all the time.

The rule goes that if you're going to quote yourself you have to footnote it. (Some Profs don't allow the same work to be turned in twice.)

They just want to up her negatives.

By the way... Ann stole the words "and", "the", "I", ..."liberal", "stupid" and "next" from my last unpublished story.

She just rearranged them a bit.

iThenticate sounds like an interesting program. I would be interested in seeing the results of other books it has analyzed.

For many months one of my posts on Santa Claus managed to get into the top 5 on Google.com (when looking for Santa) ~ and it wasn't really about Santa Claus, just reindeer and halucinogenic mushrooms.

So, don't anyone discount the idea that the writer's purpose was simply to get "plaigerize" and "Coulter" linked in www.google.

I wonder if "Professor" Ward Churchill's work has ever been "i-Thenticated"

Does anyone know what the sentences are?

One would think this Berkley professor would have supplied that to the Post, and that the Post would have printed them.

Just Journalism 101, right?

So if Ann writes about what, 200 words or so that "might" be "pilfered", and is therefore TOTALLY discredited for anything she says or has said for the rest of her life, what about the rest of this "pilferer's" life??

Or anyone else for that matter. It is interesting to see the results for Ann's work, but what about others? If the writer of the piece wants to be taken seriously, he/she should include a sampling of work from other authors/columnists.

I agree. Advancing these allegations without any substantiating evidence is the height of irresponsibility. may even be liable. I have her book here, and I would check it, if the info were provided. btw, now I am reading Maureen Dowd, Are Men Necessary? What a contrast! Dowd is just a chatty little whine based on talking to her friends and random cites from movies. I cannot imagine anyone wanting to try to deal with the way she thinks, and have no trouble understanding why men love Ann's steel trap rationalism and leave Dowd alone.

Furthermore, either someone had to manually transcribe or scan the pages of Coulter's book, both of which are fraught with error potential.
Why aren't the conscientious-unto-neurosis among us attacking the cedibility of these Leftist attackers?

I think coulter is attractive but she can stand to eat a few sammiches. at least to fill her face and neck out a bit.

Finding a single matching sentence fragment in two works about a common topic may be rare but its well within the realm of reasonable possibility.

This is a STUPID baseless libel to create a inflammatory headline. Its not the facts, its the seriousness of the charge. This reminds me of SCO copyright games. There is no way that any court would find a fragment of this type as proof of an infringement.

The loonie left despises and demonizes every thing Ann writes, thinks or says and now they want to claim credit for what she has written?

Twenty-five words in your sentence. How many times has this been written?
