Such public sentiment - reflected in a new statewide poll conducted by Research 2000 for the Post-Dispatch and KMOV-TV (Channel 4) - provides the landscape for Missouri's close contest for the U.S. Senate.

Among 800 likely voters polled last week, 49 percent supported state Auditor Claire McCaskill, a Democrat, in her quest to replace U.S. Sen. Jim Talent, R-Mo. That compared to 43 percent who favored retaining Talent, who has been in office since 2003. The remaining 8 percent were undecided.

Hello,
This poll is from the Post Dispatch, not the most reliable source. However, I will be offering my time to Senator Talent's reelection efforts this summer and fall.
Glad to be here, MOgirl

I don't think the McCaskill campaign is that far ahead, but at this moment I rate her a very slight favorite. There's plenty of time for Talent to change this, but he'd better have a good campaign strategy laid out.

Good luck, we need Talent back in the Senate. Both meanings apply.

Hello,
Of course (really ticks off my lib neighbors!). Actually, as I did for President Bush in '04, I will be calling voters and walking door to door to get the Talent vote out. It's the least I can do to keep a good man in office, and keep a Dem here, not in Washington.
Glad to be here, MOgirl

Looks like Talent's opponent is going for the "I'm not one of THOSE Democrats"
with her approval of $10,000 fines for employing illegal immigrants.

This may be fun to watch to see how far she'll go in playing the anti-illegal
warrior in order to get elected.

MOgirl,
We're counting on you to help get Talent over the finish line.
I still can't help but think that MacCaskils support is a mile long and an inch deep. I think this is one of those races that people will look back and say that incumbency accounted for a great deal. I don't believe in these polls, especially after watching how the leftist media uses polls to fabricate phony headlines.

Hello,
Totally agree about the polls. As the summer ends, and people begin to focus on the fall elections, I think that Talent will be in a even better spot than he is now. MO is not a left-leaning state, despite St. Louis City, and KC. For those that don't know, we have a Rep. Gov, both US Senators are Reps, our state House and Senate recently became Rep. It's been slow, but are getting there.

No, Missouri is a swing state. Many people make an assumption that just because a state picked president Bush over John Kerry by 5%, it would necessarily choose any conservative over any liberal. That's a mistake, you can look at the governors and senators of several deep-red states (North Dakota, North Carolina, Wyoming, Kansas, Nebraska) to see that it is so. Talent will have to fight hard to win re-election.

Hello,
I stand corrected, yes, MO is a swing state. If I thought that Talent was a done deal, he wouldn't need my (and many others) help in this election. However, I do believe that MO is turning more to the Right, it just has been a slow, long process. Not there yet....but getting there.

Rasmussen has it different.
Newspaper polls are garbage.
They can barely pay their reporters.

Talent will win.
There were polls in 2006 that had Bush losing to Kerry in Missouri.
Anyway.
I'm watching Astros vs. Mets - Game 3 of the 1986 NLCS.
SNY is playing this flashback game from October 11, 1986.
This is after the Mets spanked the Yankees today 8-3.
The Marlins are losing.
A nice 12 game lead.
Too bad they stunk up the place in Boston this week.
