For many years after World War II, there were various instances of Japanese soldiers being discovered on remote Pacific islands. These men, who had been cut off from civilization and communications, were not aware that the conflict was over. Often, they hid in caves to avoid detection from the supposed enemy. They remained armed, guarded and in tense anticipation of battle because of the erroneous belief that hostilities were still on going. In reality, their nation was now at peace. Their energy and efforts were futile.
