KABUL, Afghanistan - Coalition soldiers tracked a group of militants to an eastern Afghanistan safe house and killed 14 in an attack on the compound, the military said.
The insurgents were seen carrying AK-47 submachine guns and rocket-propelled grenades to a compound in the Kamdesh district of Nuristan province, a coalition statement said.
"The extremists were observed hiding and then coalition forces attacked them once they reached their safe house, destroying two buildings in the compound," the statement said.
The statement said soldiers discovered the bodies of 14 fighters inside the compound.
The coalition gave no details on the nationality of its soldiers in the operation, but U.S. troops have been operating alongside Afghan forces throughout eastern Afghanistan since April, hunting Taliban militants and allied extremists along the border with Pakistan.
Afghan and coalition forces also raided a village in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar, killing one suspected militant and detaining eight others, the military said.
The suspected militants were believed to have planned and carried out attacks on Afghan and coalition forces in Kandahar and neighboring Helmand province, the military said.
There were no reported civilian or coalition casualties during the raid, which met with "minimal resistance," the statement added.
More than 10,000 U.S., Canadian, British and Afghan soldiers are scouring southern Afghan provinces for Taliban fighters in the largest military offensive launched since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion that ousted the Taliban for harboring al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.
Since May, more than 600 Afghans, mainly militants, have been reported killed, the coalition said.
Taliban militants ambushed a U.S. convoy Thursday in eastern Kunar province, sparking a firefight that killed one civilian and wounded two, a police official said.
Police chief Abdul Jalal Jalal said three civilians were wounded in the clash, one fatally.
In southern Zabul province, Taliban fighters attacked a local district chief's office Thursday. Police killed two Taliban fighters and wounded four in the hour-long gunbattle, said provincial police chief Noor Mohammed Paktin.
The Taliban fled with the injured fighters, Paktin said.
Police arrested six suspected militants in southern Ghazni province after a highway policeman was abducted, police chief Thafser Khan said.
The lessons of the Russian campaign have been learned.
Bin Laden...MUST be in Pakistan....no way he's in Afghanistan...
NY Times reports Taliban spokesman said 14 killed but losses were light compared to size of operation. No casulty reports were available for coalition forces. /sarc.
I guess that solves the whole GITMO question...
The vaunted Taliban "spring offensive" as breathlessly reported and pined for by the NY Times must still be under way.
.... and in the best way possible.
Another wedding party crashed?
We are really handing it to these Talibanimals. They are once again thoroughly getting there asses handed to them. I love it. Don't ask questions, just kill. No more room at Club Gitmo.
Collect what intel you can and send out another rapid strike force....
Move to the next target.
Nah, just that their funeral was arranged for them.
It read:
"Don't pet the Taliban"
The guy said he was down at Gitmo.
