Violence surges in Basra despite government emergency measures

Unidentified gunmen stormed a primary school building and killed its principal as he handed out certificates to its pupils.

The incident happened in the district of Zubair, north of Basra.

Zubair is a mixed town where Sunnis make up a slight majority but Shiite militias have the upper hand in Basra and wield tremendous power in the region.

British forces, who are technically in charge of security in Basra, have failed to chip away at the militias’ influence.

And apparently the new government of Nouri al-Maliki, which declared a state of emergency in the city, is too week or reluctant to exercise authority.

As a result, rival militias have divided the city into zones of influence and are taking the law into their hands.

Revenge killings are on the rampant. Scores of university professors, doctors, clergymen and hundreds of ordinary citizens have lost their lives.

Don't need to read more. Look at the source. I trust the British Military when it evaluates the situation in Basra. Arab media is nearly as bad as Reuters and the AP.

You're right. Poisonous and obvious agitprop.
