MSNBC Replaces 'Rita Cosby'
TV Week ^ | 6/29/06 | Michele Greppi

Posted on 06/29/2006 7:45:44 PM PDT by LdSentinal

Rita Cosby is losing her year-old MSNBC show and will get her own specials unit for the cable channel effective July 10.

The shuffle, which MSNBC announced Thursday, is the first big move of Dan Abrams' three-week tenure as MSNBC's general manager.

"Rita Cosby: Live and Direct," which has been telecast at 10 p.m. (ET) weeknights and repeated at 1 a.m. (ET) since late spring, will be replaced by taped documentary programming, under the familiar label of "MSNBC Investigates." Ms. Cosby will serve as the primary anchor of "Investigates," which has been led by various rotating anchors over years. "Investigates" also will run at 11 p.m.

Joe Scarborough's "Scarborough Country" will remain at 9 p.m. weeknights.

"The Situation With Tucker Carlson" will move into the 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. timeslots that have been the home of "The Abrams Report," the legal-issues and crime show that Mr. Abrams hosted prior to his promotion.

Ms. Cosby left Fox News Channel last year to host her weeknight show. In June, "Rita Cosby" averaged 233,000 viewers, 93,000 of them in the core news demo of 25 to 54, according to data from Nielsen Media Research. That's down from her first month on the air, August 2005, when she averaged 398,000 viewers, 146,000 of them in the demo.

In addition to being down since last year, "Rita Cosby" has been losing lead-in from "Scarborough Country," which averaged 319,000 viewers, 109,000 of them in the demo, in June

And Bridget Quinn stutters. Then, along comes Martha McCollum and I swear she must think Quinn's stuttering is cool because she does it, too, and even in the same or similar cadence.

Back to Rita's "sources" again. Now she'll be the Greta Van Susteren of MSNBC, only more Rubensesque.

They are kind of in a no win when Imus is gone. They used to run best ofs, but the material was so dated that didn't work. Then they ran a regular news show, but anyone they pick up during Imus's downtime is shocked when he returns. And there is no time to build any loyalty to the hosts or the network because in a week or two the show returns to Imus. So I guess they are putting the reruns of the evening shows on.

I also think Paula was a bit snooty - and for no reason. I never watched her show on Fox but her move to CNN was a huge mistake. After I realized what a lib she was, I was fine with her going to the natural place for her kind - CNN. I never minded Rita - I kinda liked her. She was able to get interviews no one else could and I remember her standing out after JFK, Jr. died. I wouldn't mind seeing her back on FNC.

Wouldn't that be like remarrying the guy you divorced after you divorced the replacement guy you married?

I think it's against the law.

At least with Phil, you always knew you were dealing with someone who was certifiably lunatic with the crazy eyes to prove it.

His lenses actually did create 4 eyes all rolling at once.

(I swear that sometimes the two eyes on the right side rolled in opposite directions....how'd he do that??? :>)

In June, "Rita Cosby" averaged 233,000 viewers

Of whom 225,000 were looking for reruns of The Cosby Show on their TiVo, plus several hundred confused Trekkies who marveled at how much weight Denise Crosby had put on.

Joe Scarborough is sooo annoying. He looks like a chipmunk. I have not watched his show in years. He is awful and has gone to the dark side and that is how he keeps his job.

He has to be one of the nastiest people on tv. Olbermann would be the first person I got rid of for sure.
