Priest: Buffett is 'Dr. Mengele of philanthropists'
CNN.com ^ | 30 June 2006

NEW YORK (AP) -- Warren Buffett's new philanthropic alliance with fellow billionaire Bill Gates won widespread praise this week, but anti-abortion activists did not join in, instead assailing the two donors for their longtime support of Planned Parenthood and international birth-control programs.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to which Buffett has pledged the bulk of his $44-billion fortune, devotes the vast majority of its funding to combating disease and poverty in developing countries. Less than 1 percent has gone to Planned Parenthood over the years. And the Gates Foundation does not permit its gifts to Planned Parenthood to be used for abortion services.

"The merger of Gates and Buffett may spell doom for the families of the developing world," said the Rev. Thomas Euteneuer, a Roman Catholic priest who is president of Human Life International.

Referring to Josef Mengele, the infamous Nazi death camp doctor, Euteneuer said Buffett "will be known as the Dr. Mengele of philanthropy unless he repents."

The Planned Parenthood Federation of America issued statements praising Buffett and Gates for their generosity. Gloria Feldt, a former Planned Parenthood president, said she was appalled by the harsh attacks on them.

"What an outrage that these people have

> Testimony from a fellow-cyclist's wife that Lance admittedly used steroids and other performance enhancing drugs.

Testimony ain't fact. And my understanding was that the "performance enhancing" drugs that Lance admitted to taking were related to his cancer recovery.

> He 'beats' cancer and says God had nothing to do with it.

Medical technology. Science triumphs again!

> Lance leaves his wife and kids to shack up with a rock queen; and he's a media idol.

One word: Newt. Another word: Rush.

Marriages end. It happens.

> I feel ill every time see someone wearing a yellow plastic wrist-band.

You might want to seek help for that. Sounds psychosomatic.

Abortion is the only thing that will save this earth from the scourge of overpopulation. I dislike Bill Gates intensely but if his foundation is supporting necessary medical service procedures like abortion to prevent undisciplined, ignorant adults in backwards nations from having unwanted children that cannot be sustained or cared for than it is a blessing. Abortion as a religious or moral issue is nothing compared to the impending disaster of overpopulation this world will face. America will face it as well, it is terrible that certain people - illegals, the poor etc. insist on having children they cannot afford and should not have. Population control is needed and abortion is a key weapon to saving this country.

As someone who is pro-abortion I have said what I believe.
Pro-lifers can now disparage me and how evil I am and burn me at the stake. Enjoy.

How thoughtful of CNN to help us understand how foolish the worries of anti-abortion people are!

Exactly!

And the Gates Foundation does not permit its gifts to Planned Parenthood to be used for abortion services.

Earmarked funds. Why didn't I think of that? They probably write on the dollar bills, "for office supplies only."

Exactly. Studies have shown that in third-world countries where sex-ed and condoms are spread around, AIDS rates increase drastically. But in the Phillipines, where Catholic authorities have succeeded in pushing abstinence, the AIDS rate has declined, although when AIDS first appeared it was as bad in the Phillipines as in Africa.

Don't confuse us with facts.

Abortion is the only thing that will save this earth from the scourge of overpopulation.

Overpopulation? You're kidding right? Where have you been for the last 10-20 years? Population in the West is imploding. Nations like Italy are disappearing. And then there's the fact that the world is largely uninhabited. But don't let anyone confuse you with facts.

You appear to have a basic inherent, albeit misguided, honesty, so I'll take your word for it--

OK, I'll disparage you.

For one thing, it's been shown over and over that as a society becomes wealthier, the birthrate drops. Therefore, logically, abortion is NOT the only thing that will save the Earth from overpopulation. Getting Asia and Africa to become wealthier will do it as well.

As to overpopulation, I've seen studies that claim the Earth could comfortably support 18 billion.

I've also seen a report that shows the entire population of the Earth can live in a typical suburban-style population density, just in the space of Texas.

(And yes, in the interest of full disclosure, Warren Buffett has been very, very good to my family in our 35 years as Berkshire Hathaway investors).

So how does that blood feel on your hands? Oops, there I go "pouting" again.

Oh, please. Spare me the theatrics. There is no blood on my hands. If you invest in corporate America at all, there are going to be some things done by every company you invest in that you don't agree with.

And if you don't invest at all, you're going to be living under a bridge in retirement.

Ask George Bush how the blood feels on his hands, if you're going to ask me; federal funding of Planned Parenthood has increased every year under this administration.

You sound like a racist to me. Why do you hate atheistic baby killer Gates? When do you advocate killing the infirmed and elderly? You remind me of Hillary and Karl Marx in that you seem to believe in governmental/social control of the people and that it is YOU who should decide which children should die and which ones should not.

Ah, you're a Bush basher in addition to a baby killer supporter huh? Interesting. Why don't you ask Buffettt's kids how they feel about his actions?

Well, in season four, they pretty much have been exclusively foaming-at-the-mouth hate pieces against conservatives when there are any relevancies to politics: against the boy scouts, against the death penalty, for prostitution, and for sex education devoid of abstinence. And these are all cases where the media can sometimes be a little politically correct on the conservative side. Even though their correctness is very contrived and purposely counterproductive, it should be no wonder by the DUmmies love them so much!

Looks like they started out apolitical (season 1) took on some political targets left and right (seasons 2 and 3), got in some political hot water with their puppetmasters, and became obedient, little Stalinist lackies (season 4). Bill Maher, please pick up the courtesy phone...

Haven't even seen season 3 yet (don't have Showtime, only get to watch on DVD). That said:

> obedient, little Stalinist lackies (season 4).

"The Boy Scouts" (against their discrimination against gays and atheists)

A conservative, or at least libertarian, case can be made here. It has long been policy that organizations that discriminate don't get bennies from governemnt organizations... like public schools. Would you support letting the Gay Scouts or the Jihad Scouts or the Black panther Scouts having the same school access as the Boy Scouts?

"Prostitution" (pro-legalization)

Again, libertarian. What people willingly do with each other... nunyerdambidness.

"The Death Penalty" (against)

Meh. Me, I'm fer killin' 'em.

"Cryptozoology" (concerning the mythological creatures such as Big Foot and the Loch Ness monster)

How is this "Stalinist?"

"Ground Zero" and the dragging of feet in rebuilding and lack of (family approved) memorials.

Haven't seen it, don't really know what tack they took on what subjects. But is it really Stalinist to wonder why, five years later, the site is still a hole?

"Pet Love" (concerns people spoiling pets with diamond dog collars, expensive food, et cetera)

Do you have an issue with this?

"Reparations" (mostly against)

Or *this*????

"Manners" (pro rational manners that make sense, against arbitrary manners)

Or *that*??????

"Numbers" (how they can be used to deceive polls and how you can be scammed)

9 out of 10 climatologist friends of Al Gore say he got the science just right.

"Abstinence" (against abstinence-only education)

OK, this is one that *most*, but not *all* conservatives would probably take issue with.

So, I'm not really seeing the Stalinism here.

No, I'm not a Bush-basher. Various pro-life groups, particularly the American Life League, have really taken him to task for this ongoing support. My pointing out the increases in funding is not bashing.

I read the current issue of Fortune, which has a very big story on Buffett - and his children, and how everyone expects to administer the money. Buffett has said for several years that he does not intend to leave his fortune to his family, and his kids administer the existing Buffett foundations.

You seem to have an awfully big chip on your shoulder about money you were not likely to get, anyway.
