WASHINGTON, June 29 /U.S. Newswire/ -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in opposition to H.R. 4761, which opens up new areas of the Outer Continental Shelf for oil and gas drilling and allows drilling 50 miles from the coastline:

"This bill is bad for the environment of coastal states. By revoking the ban on drilling for oil and natural gas, it will subject many sensitive coastal areas to harm.

"In my home state of California, we have learned from bitter experience that a large oil spill can cause long-lasting damage to the marine ecosystem at all levels, including seabirds, marine mammals, and fisheries. We also learned that a large spill can cause enormous damage to our economy by damaging vibrant, tourism-based coastal communities and businesses.

"Like so many Republican bills, this bill is also fiscally irresponsible. It redirects federal royalty payments from the treasury to coastal states where drilling is occurring offshore on the Outer Continental Shelf.

"We do not know what the cost to the federal treasury will be in the long run, but we know it will be huge. Last week, the Bush Administration estimated that the bill would cost the treasury $69 billion dollars over 15 years. In the meantime, the bill's supporters have been scrambling to make it look less expensive by bringing down the costs in the near-term.

"A small number of states -- the ones where drilling is already occurring offshore -- will do quite well if this bill passes. But for most states,

Try telling the Chinese and the Venezuelans that the Continental Shelf is "protected". They plan to drill there anyway, Popeye.

I'll comment...

Boy, she really is dumb.

She wants us to believe that an oil policy is not an energy policy, all the while she appears all over the place complaining about high energy prices caused by the high cost of oil.

And the Democrat's energy policy is to take away people's cars and ban any method whatsoever that can produce energy (especially the cleanest source: nuclear). Want to bet which one Americans like more in the coming elections?

Most American's will be thinking: "Which one do I chose? The North Korea-Cuba method or the Republican's way? Hmm...."

The state of Texas and, by default, the people therein (but not all!) are afflicted with the dreaded malady known as.......

common sense.

Get well soon! :-)

Oh Nancy,

Increasing the supply of oil and natural gas with off shore drilling will lower the price. More supply, lower prices . . .

Additionally, the population is growing, we'll need to drill more just to stay even with consumption.

The fact is that the liberals constantly point to the Santa Barbara oil spill of the 1960s as to why drilling is so risky.

It was one spill, and technology has changed enormously in 40 years. Today, we're able to have entire platforms disappear in a hurricane with no oil spill.

Offshore drilling brings onshore jobs to the states where it occurs.

It can be done safely and the benefits are obvious.

Why are you against cheaper fuel for your impoverished voters you bugged eyed twit? Because the Republicans and the Americans want it? She needs to visit an oil platform and someone needs to give her a good shove over the edge.
