I don't remember the date but The Japanese long ago realized they could learn from other civilizations and they sent delegations to other countries to study and learn the ways of other peoples and bring them back to Japan. They sent people to Germany to learn military, education, civil society, technology and lots of other things. These people brought back their knowledge and adapted it to Japanese culture. I worked in Japan for a couple years and I could see the influence of this in many areas of their culture. This trait of actively searchiing other countries for better ways is an advantage the Japanese have over the Afghans and Iraqis. Of course they are sending some people like teachers to America to learn but not the major effort the Japanese made when they suddenly realized they must catch up. I think it was during the nineteenth century.

My meaning makes sense given those facts.

I can't imagine you thinking of anything else, Purple. Not that a lively imagination is a bad thing.

But for now I must say goodnight.

Gretchen sent the pix in the e-mail and I just uploaded the joke.

The person that first put it together knows how to use photos.

I may use it and stick it in part of a windows movie maker video...cuz it is so funny.

I was looking at it through a different window; what you wrote puts a much broader light on the whole thing.

Did you work in other countries besides Japan?

The entertainment was provided by the Brian Setzer Orchestra, known for song "Jump Jive An' Wail."

That is SUCH a good choice! We also have seen many TV specials of Mr. Setzer & the orchestra performing in Japan. (In fact, I got Mr. Tart a whole pile of the CDs for Christmas last year. We love 'em!)

The audience seems to love really good Rockabilly artists. It seems to be a Japanese craze!

The president has given us the words:

President Bush: "Japan and the United States have built a strong alliance and a close friendship. Decades ago, our two fathers looked across the Pacific and saw adversaries, uncertainty and war. Today their sons look across that same ocean and see friends and opportunity and peace. ... ...You've had a remarkable tenure as the Prime Minister of your country. You have led with courage, you have made hard decisions. You've helped us change our relationship so that Japan and the United States will be able to work even closer together in the 21st century."

I lost three uncles in that war and I'm not trying to minimize what happened 65 years ago. To me the Japanese flag brings back memories of war time as well. However, I'll will take the Japanese as allies anytime over the French.

Thank you President Bush for showing this world what a forgiving nation and strong leadership can do for international relationships built on trust.

Back in my day, we didn't have none o' your fancy 'lectric toasters. Our toasters were giant coal-burning beasts, like this one--carved from pure American steel! When it toasted a slice of bread, by gar, it stayed toasted!

In all my nearly 31 years I've never had toast spontaneously untoast itself. ;-)

You're so right about "Mama's Family," I called it "beating a dead horse!" But I think the reason was there was no Carol on that show.
