Utah race stirs calls for a deal on immigration After Bush ally scores a victory in GOP primary, one lawmaker pushes comprehensive bill
By GEBE MARTINEZ
WASHINGTON - With President Bush's immigration policy surviving fierce criticism in a Utah congressional race, lawmakers on both sides of the debate turned their attention Wednesday to finding a compromise on immigration legislation.
Those who oppose Bush's call for immigration reform which includes a guest worker program and legalization opportunities for millions of illegal immigrants along with tougher border security saw five-term Rep. Chris Cannon, R-Utah, survive a tough primary challenge after allying with Bush on the issue.
Cannon defeated businessman John Jacob 56 percent to 44 percent on Tuesday after Jacob, an opponent of Bush's immigration plan, tried to make the race a referendum on the issue. Most House Republicans want a bill that calls only for tougher enforcement of immigration laws.
Cannon's victory was celebrated by Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., who discussed with Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney on Wednesday his plan to tighten borders first and then leave room for consideration for other immigration programs.
He proposes that after two years, illegal immigrants would have to go home briefly to have their backgrounds and job status checked before being allowed re-entry to the United States. The Senate bill does not require most of the 12 million illegal immigrants to go home.
Pence said Cannon's victory indicates that "those of us who are calling for tough border security measures in some kind of a comprehensive bill can know that we're standing on a sure foundation of support among Republican voters."
White House spokesman Tony Snow, noting Cannon's win, said Americans want comprehensive reform. "The president remains determined to get all of the pieces addressed at once in legislation, and not to do it piecemeal, but to have comprehensive reform," he said.
But Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., who formed a group that targeted Cannon for defeat, said the primary nonetheless showed that immigration is a tough election-year issue. "If it takes the president's participation in a safe Republican district to get elected, he's got a lot of work cut out for him," Tancredo said.
House Majority Leader John Boehner of Ohio declined to say whether House Republicans would compromise their "enforcement only" stance for "enforcement first."
And House leaders said Cannon's win adds no momentum in the House to Bush's immigration policy. "The vast majority of our conference believes that strengthening our border, securing it and enforcing our laws are critical steps in the process of cleaning up the problem that we have," Boehner said.
Most of us have moved on now and have accepted the fact that Cannon will be re-elected. I don't know what you're gloating about. The seat remains in GOP hands, Cannon is just one of 435 Congressmen, who even if he casts a vote supporting the Senate's AMNESTY plan he'll be in the minority anyway. And the 2008 elections are already on the horizon.
Grow up Dane and quit acting like a lib.
Sad that so many, including posters here, were so indifferent to our future or hated this country so much that they were eagerly willing to sell it out to the invaders.
Of course, racism has nothing to do with not wanting criminals to overrun this country. I have for years spoken out against the blond and blue-eyed superviolent Russian Mafia. Mexicans are often pointed out only because there are so many of them, they have made the most outrageous demands for special perks not available to others, and they led disgusting demonstrations, dissing our flag and shouting obscenities.

Okay let me see if I have this straight. If Cannon wins and there is some gloating, bad, very bad, almost satan like bad.
But if Jacob had won, you(lou dobbs, wiener(savage), hannity, etc.etc) would be gloating , which is good, since your candidate Jacob overcame the satan like President Bush forces(i.e recorded phone calls) to win.
What do you all smoke in the basement of tancredo/bay buchanan headquarters?
It's just my opinion but you're not going to see a bill anytime soon. Utah isn't impacted as bad as California or Texas or even New England is yet so Cannon was able to pull it off. The congressional caucus from those other states however are still not going to go along with any amnesties.
Internationalists like Dane & PRND21 know deep down that the long-term trend is against them. That is why they so shrilly hype good news for their One-World-View -- because they know it's getting scarcer and scarcer by the day.
Dane, will you admit that as much as you despise Tancredo, his voting record is far superior to Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, Cynthia McKinney, Maxine Waters, and a host of like-minded Dems?
Oh you mean tancredo's original plan, which Mike Pence endorsed.
This is so funny, you all give Linda Blairs acting in the movie "The Exorcist" a run for the money, the way your heads are spinning.
And then I ask you this question, wasn't it putrid that tom tancredo and his medusa bay buchanan, went after another 100% ACU conservative, Chris Cannon.
JMO, I will probably hear crickets from my post from you, but what the hey most hypocrites are silent when presented with the truth, such as the pharisees.
Dane:

Do you always answer questions with one of your own? Just a simple yes or no would suffice.
It?
Please name California's two Senators. Please tell me their stands on immigration. Please try to explain why that would imply that Californians put immigration among the top 5 of their concerns.
Could it be because Jim Matheson wasn't forced into a primary campaign, and won't be campaigning until before the November election? Could it also be that replacing a relatively conservative Democrat with another Democrat, would achieve nothing?
You are correct Dude. Bay Buchanan officially nominated Merrill Cook for the 3rd Congressional District at the Republican Convention in May. He was knocked out in the first round of voting.
Tancredo/Buchanan then backed Jacob as the only man standing between Cannon and his reelection.
It's the GOP congressional caucus from those states, the districts they're running in aren't interested in amnesties. The goal is to keep the House isn't it or do you want the Boxers and Feinsteins taking that as well? Besides, it's doing what is right for the country and amnesty is not it.
I'll trade you Boardwalk and Park Place for Marvin Gardens and Community Chest.
IOW, the tancredo/bay buchanan PAC couldn't spend their monetary resources on a person(Jim Matheson) who would vote for nancy pelosi as Speaker of the House, their(tancredo/bay buchanan) political monetary resources were better spent on trying to unseat a 100% ACU conservative.
JMO sounds kinda of agent provacateurish, IMO.
IOW, doing nancy pelosi's and the DNC's bidding, but what the hey you guys lost, bigtime.
"That's not a very convincing win by a 5 term incumbent in his own party's primary."
Further, the incumbent has an envious lifetime ACU approaching 100.
Yet he stands with Bush, wanting a "compromise" on immigration. His 56 to 44 percent win is simply evidence the Republican party is SPLIT on this issue.
Pence tried to put something forth that bridges the difference between the Senate and House bills. Specter has indicated he would move in the direction of some House provisions.
The nastiness used to attack Cannon, an otherwise rock-rib-solid conservative went way, way beyond Reagan's 11th Commandment.
Reagan's 11th Commandment is fading out of memory. That is too bad.
