(IsraelNN.com) United States Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice joined the G8 industrialized nations group in calling for restraint by IDF forces that entered Gaza to rescue a soldier who was kidnapped by Hamas terrorists on Sunday.
Rice added that diplomatic officials continue to work toward obtaining the release of 19-year-old Corporal Gilad Shalit, who was taken hostage during the raid on an IDF outpost near the Kerem Shalom border crossing. Two soldiers were killed and four others wounded in the attack.
Shalits whereabouts are unknown and his captors refuse to return him.
Is that why Israel is pausing?

Think it's really because of Egyptian desires?
There is a back channel except it's not what some think. When in public the US says restraint, in private it says stop.
As always, the US was silent for a couple of days. That was the limit Israel was allowed so far.
My guess is military wisdom. The Israelis are trying to provoke the Palis into panic, but the Isralis are keeping their cool.
Urban warfare is a recipe for heavy casualties. Israel is being careful to send young men and women into narrow streets full of booby traps and window gunmen.

Hey, Condi: when the US releases Manuel Noriega from prison, and then (officially) gives away large parts of California, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Texas to Mexico (or, better yet, the La Raza Party), THEN START LECTURING ISRAEL.
Until then, STFU.
I thought we were conducting a Global War on Terror. Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Hezbollah are terrorist organizations, and Hamas is the elected government of the Pals these days. American citizens have been killed in Gaza and in Israel proper by terrorist bombs. So why exactly can't we declare war on all these scum?
Israel to Rice: "We only flew over pencilneck's house!"
What you may not know, that I do, is that there is a 50+ years repetitive pattern here.
These hostilities always end prematurely with the effect of nurturing the next break out.
It's not by coincidence.
They aren't going to say that publicly.
I would like to think, and maybe I'm wrong, that "show restraint" means go for anything short of the glass parking lot.
Really, does anyone think that the USA could possibly say, you go for it? Right out loud, I mean.
Come on. What we say publicly and privately are two different things. I would never expect the public statemtn to be, "Kill the Bastards!"
"I wish for once our State Department would say to Israel: "Do what you have to do -- we've got your back.""
Me too, but the State Department has been taken over by Leftist Democrats who served Democratic presidents when they are in office and directly serve enemies of the United States when Republican presidents are in office.
No we couldn't say that out loud
"Rice to Israel: Show Restraint
Good grief. The time for play-games with terrorists and terrorist-states has been waaaaay over since 9/11/2001. Time to quit making ridiculous statements and tell them straight up. Whoever doesn't like the plain words, can go pound sand."
Frankly, I've had it with Rice. The State Department has ruined her. I knew she wasn't tough enough to clean it up---however positive her intentions may originally have been.
Well said.
Oh, thank you for saying that. I can't believe that people who are as sophisticated as the people here do not yet understand that we have to say one thing in public and another in private.
"Did Israel ask for her opinion or advice?"
Well, the US sort of automatically has opinions on important events throughout the world. The problem isn't that she has an opinion---it is that it's wrong.
Ummm, I take back my "Condi 08" mantra.
