I have a problem with any of these mega-chain stores - WalMart, Home Depot, Lowes, Target, etc.

My issue is that they drive out small, independent retailers who run businesses which are often family owned, community oriented, and sell quality products - consequently at prices above that of the cheap garbage a lot of these mega stores sell.

I think a more expensive quality product is cheaper in the long as it lasts longer and performs better. Also, small specialty stores are generally run by people who are knowledgable about the products they sell and can give you intelleigant advice - soemthing often lacking in these mega stores.

But Wal-Mart is probably no better or no worse than the other mega stores in this regard.

Even if you don't like WalMart, Home Depot, Lowes, Target, etc., you are required to shop there anyway.

It's the law.

Every time I see a Wal-Mart or Target open, it is SURROUNDED by mom and pop businesses. From what I've seen, its not just other chains that occupy the strip malls surrounding the big boxes, its mom and pop shops!

This myth about Wal Mart killing "the little guy" is as STUPID as saying that McDonald's and Chile's killed independent restaurants.
