Poland detains man over attack on top rabbi

WARSAW - Polish police have detained a man over last month’s attack on the country’s Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich, which sparked concerns among Jewish leaders and diplomats of rising xenophobia in Poland.

“We have detained a young man who is responsible for this act,” police spokesman Zbigniew Matwiej said on Wednesday. He declined to give further details.

Schudrich, a New Yorker, was attacked in the center of Warsaw in May. According to the Rabbi the man yelled “Poland is for Poles”, and hit and sprayed him with what appeared to be pepper spray after Schudrich asked him why he was insulting him.

The incident happened during Pope Benedict’s first visit to Poland, where he visited Auschwitz to pray for the reconciliation of Jews and Catholics...
