Dean: 'We're About to Enter the '60s Again'
CNSNews.com ^ | June 28, 2006 | Randy Hall

America is about to revisit one of the most turbulent decades in its history, Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean told a religious conference in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday. "We're about to enter the '60s again," Dean said, but he was not referring to the Vietnam War or racial tensions.

Dean said he is looking for "the age of enlightenment led by religious figures who want to greet Americans with a moral, uplifting vision."

"The problem is when we hit that '60s spot again, which I am optimistic we're about to hit, we have to make sure that we don't make the same mistakes," Dean added. See Video

"We're about to enter the '60s again,"

What evidence is there that Dr. Dean ever left the sixties?

"Howie, come quick, your parents are in trouble! Back in 1961!"

One of the more intriguing techniques of smoking a joint is taking what is known as a powerhit. This is accomplished by having an accomplice surround the burning end of the joint with their mouth, taking care not to allow their skin to come into contact with the glowing end, and blowing while one takes a hit from the other end. This can be somewhat dicey, but is one of the more intimate ways of sharing a joint.

Wasn't that technique also known as shotgunning?

Sorry, I don't know. I didn't inhale.

As an aging boomer, he doesn't see that the conditions that made the 60s turbulent are missing now...;

No more Soviet Union to root for, most of the bands are either dead, disbanded or playing in Indian casinos, and those under 30 cannot be trusted. Getting old is tough.

The only good thing about the 60's were the fashions.

And even they were horrid so that's not saying much about the 60's, is it?

The Dixie Chicks aint Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan was/is a good song writer but he can't sing his way out of a paper bag. His voice is awful.

Love that cougar. My mom had a '69 model during the 1970s that she let rust out. You don't see many of them any more.

That sounds frighteningly like they are wishing for the Anti-Christ to show up. Mr. 666. Uh-oh. Not me. I'll stick with Jesus and his message.

You may have point - we are, after all dealing with an unhinged mind.

But they will be looking for the #666 - which may, or may NOT - according to recently discovered papyrus, be the number of the antiChrist...it may be 616...who knows? I doubt man will, any more than man will know when Christ is coming back "But of that day and hour knoweth no man"

It behooves us, then, to walk the straight and and narrow every day ;o)

Dean's wrong, but it's not so crazy an idea.

Wars and upsurges in patriotism go together. Foreign wars may prove unpopular and lead protest and radicalism. But even if they don't, the public mood tends to shift over time from patriotic celebration to a self-critical attitude and efforts at reform or more radical change. The idea seems to be, "If we're so great, what about _______ [fill in blank] right here at home."

You could see this in the 1950s and 1960s, also in the 1900s and 1910s. Stretching things a little, you might find something similar going on in the 1840s and 1850s. Wars raise hopes and the desire for action which then turn in new directions. If the wars are unpopular or unsuccessful, that's all the more reason for discontent.

Of course conditions are different now than in the 1960s. For one thing, there's no single focus for domestic discontent equivalent to segregation and the civil rights movement. For another, the Sixties grew out of fifty years of liberal intellectual dominance, and conservative opinion is more prominent today. Also, people don't have the feeling that the age of affluence has come to stay or that one could be young forever that economics and demography produced forty years ago.

What Dean makes of this is another matter. It looks like he's caught up in a politics of feelings and emotionality. The Sixties brought a lot of disorder and unhappiness, but Howard Dean wants the experience of surfing through a tumultuous period and doesn't really consider the possible harmful consequences of such upheavals. It's lucky for all of us the Sixties aren't actually "coming back" any time soon.

For one thing, Dylan sings better. 8>)

He may have a gift for songwriting but he can't sing at all. William Hung has a better voice than Bob Dylan.
