Jacobs Concedes, Cannon Moves on to General Election

June 27th, 2006 @ 11:12pm

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- U.S. Rep. Chris Cannon, challenged by a political newcomer who accused the five-term incumbent of being soft on illegal immigration, was leading in Utah's Republican primary Tuesday with more than half of precincts reporting.

Cannon led John Jacob 58 percent to 42 percent, or 19,575 votes to 14,395 votes, with 313 of 623 precincts reporting. That includes 100 percent of returns from Juab, Beaver and Millard counties.

The 3rd Congressional District race focused primarily on who stands taller in opposition to Bush's call for a path to citizenship for some 11 million illegal immigrants.

Cannon voted last December for a House bill that would toughen border security, criminalize people who help illegal immigrants and make being in the U.S. without the required papers a felony. But he also supports Bush's proposal for a guest-worker program and says "there's massive room for negotiation."

Cannon's willingness to compromise made him a target of Team America, a conservative group that calls illegal immigration the most critical problem facing the nation. It spent $40,000 on radio ads criticizing him.

Jacob, a millionaire real-estate developer, favors returning illegal immigrants to their home countries before giving them a shot at U.S. citizenship and punishing businesses for hiring them.

At the state Republican convention last month, Jacob captured 52 percent of the delegate votes while Cannon got 48 percent. Sixty percent was needed to avoid Tuesday's primary.

The winner will face Democrat Christian Burridge, among others, in November in a district that anyone but a Republican has little chance of winning. Bush carried the 3rd District with 77 percent of the vote in 2004.

The sprawling district, which stretches south from Salt Lake County and west to Nevada, is heavily Mormon and predominantly white. Hispanics make up about 10 percent of the population; blacks less than 1 percent.

In 1996, Cannon won the seat, in part by arguing that the Democratic incumbent, U.S. Rep. Bill Orton, was soft on immigration. In 2004, Cannon's actions on the issue prompted conservatives to back Matt Throckmorton, who managed 42 percent in his GOP primary loss.

Perhaps tomorrow they'll offer some omelet recipes now that they dropped their basket of eggs.

I think the eggs are on their faces but I am going to call it a night. See ya later.

Yep, I need to turn in as well. Tomorrow is a big day. I hadn't planned on spending so much time on FR tonight but I just couldn't resist...no matter how many times I see a buchanan disaster I still find the moaning and spinning of their devotees so amusing.

Uh, pardon your flatulence. This public idiot (who had no idea we were being invaded! until a few weeks ago) took a look at guys like you and the Tancredo Team America patrol, and Vdare, and Misc. Kooks, Inc. and suddenly saw what this whole issue was about. Thank yourselves for enlightening and energizing the dummies. Great strategy.

"What's the matter? Are you in a bad mood? LMAO. Tancredo is now irrelevant. When you attack the king make damn sure you kill him. Tiny Tom is about to find that out."

How soon you forget Bilbray's win. There we attacked the king and won. We will also win in the House to keep the Senate illegal immigration bill from becoming law. Another example of having killed the king (Prez), plus all the pompous princes (the Senate). So don't get too cocky there, as you sure aren't batting 1000.

"There are a hundred other issues that are more important to the well being of this country."

Until it becomes Atzlan one day, when you aren't looking. Then maybe it will become your number one issue, but of course, it will be too late. Unfortunately those of your ilk will have dragged down the rest of us with you.

Why were the polls so far off?

Because they are the modern-day equivalent of reading entrails for portents. Why people obsess over polls is a mystery to me. Time and time and time again, questions such as yours are asked after elections. Yet time and time and time again, lessons never learned, political junkies keep coming back for more.

Hi, Wolfstar! I went to bed early (grandkids wore me out) and woke up about half an hour ago. While I was waiting to get sleepy again I happened upon the news of the Cannon primary results; I had forgotten that election was this Tuesday.

I have been reading the opinions of various sorts with some amusement. What was supposed to be a referendum on immigration is apparently suddenly not a referendum. Or something like that.

Regarding polls...I think they are particularly valueless in predicting election results for a whole host of reasons. It's a mystery to me why there are still so many polling organizations in business.

I'm sorry, but I can't totally agree with you. There are other IMPORTANT issues, but immigration is also an important issue and controlling our borders is an important part of our security in the WOT. Our population reached 300 million just a short while ago, when I see the projected differences uncontrolled immigration makes in our national population, even 20 years from now, I am very troubled.

Our economy is also adversely affected, as are schools, medical care, on and on, ad infinitum. Just how long this damage can continue without having a serious affect on our standart of living is anyones guess.

So, no, I don't see immigration and border control as "less important" than, for example, the WOT, I consider it part of the WOT---a part that has been badly neglected by the federal government for too long a time.

I'm sure he can keep company with my Reps, they feel the same way he does, as does, evidently, the majority of the House.

I agree. This is an absolutely critical issue that will be at the center of our attention for a long time. Just look at the FR "popular keywords" list.

Why are you so much against border control and knowing who is crossing them and coming into this country illegally? You are, I assume, from Texas, and so I am mystified.

Tancredo is a "snake" because he brought a very important issue to the attention of the American people?? Sorry, but I thought that was his job as a politician. Are you upset because he isn't following the President's policy in lockstep?

We'd be in really deep do-do if we didn't have people who presented ideas and even challenged the leader of our party sometimes.

In the real world, Bilbray ran as an anti-illegal immigration candidate.
Canon used his corporate funds to claim that he too was against illegal immigration.
At the same time, Jacob was a bad candidate, whose comments about the devil should have dropped him into single digits. Instead he got 42% of the vote.

Texasforever: There are a hundred other issues that are more important to the well being of this country.

Is that why the last 40-50 of your comments on FR were on illegal immigration?

Since the incumbent won, and since the incumbent backs Bush, this will totally ignored by the LameStream Media.

Cannon is an open borders puke. The worst of the lot in the US House of Representatives. The clowns in the Mormon church there (Utah) are bizarrely open borders. Their hierarchy promotes it, dittos for the Catholic hierarchy. It's based on body count. How many more warm butts can you get in those church pews.
