For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary
June 27, 2006

President Bush Goes on Run with Staff Sergeant Christian Bagge
The South Lawn

4:02 P.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT: I first met Christian when I went to Walter Reed -- or Brooke Army in San Antonio, Texas. And he said, "I want to run with you." He was in bed -- he had lost both legs. I looked at him, like, you know, there's an optimistic person. But I could tell in his eyes that he meant it. And after a lot of hard work and a lot of compassionate care, this fine man is here on the South Lawn running with the President. And he ran the President into the ground, I might add. (Laughter.)

President George W. Bush meets with U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Christian Bagge, 23, of Eugene, Ore., in the Oval Office Tuesday, June 27, 2006. Mr. Bagge lost both legs to a roadside bomb in Iraq while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. After their meeting, the two ran together on the South lawn. It's an amazing sight for me to be running with a guy who, last time I saw him, was in bed wondering whether or not -- I was wondering whether or not he'd ever get out of bed. There was no doubt in his mind that he would.

Thank you for your service.

STAFF SERGEANT BAGGE: Your welcome, Mr. President.

THE PRESIDENT: Good man. God bless you.

STAFF SERGEANT BAGGE: It's a privilege.

THE PRESIDENT: We're not through running yet. Get out of the way. (Laughter.)

END 4:03 P.M. EDT

You know, I think I might have to retire in Texas. I've seen a few people from down there that seem like damn fine individuals.

I can't imagine how he keeps his balance.

It looks difficult. Must have taken hard work to master that.

I may get frustrated with some of his policies sometimes, but this is why I'm damned glad GWB is the President, and not Gore or Kerry or Clinton or some other damn phony. I can't picture any of them relating to our soldiers the way this man does.

Compare & contrast: Clinton White House - BJs with loopy intern. Bush 43 White House - Jogging with courageous veteran.

*This*,boys and girls,is *true* courage.I'm in awe of all
the men and women who have sacrificed so much in our Armed Forces. As a Marine Corps General said in summarizing one of the battles in the Pacific during WWII..."uncommon valor was a common commodity".

So self-deprecating, and willing to build others up at his expense. What an awesome man!

What an incredible guy. And to think Bush hasn't got the balls to go after the NY Times and the leakers who are putting ALL americans, home and abroad, at risk. This is a fine example of a hero, and a politician who cowers in fear of the pinko, commie, liberal MSM scum. Bush doesn't deserve to go running with this fine soldier. Flame on, but i'm pissed about these traitors in the media and leakers getting the kid glove treatment, while fine soldiers like this man are losing limbs and dying. Bush should have the justice dept. perp walking these bastards out of the Times Bldg. with cameras rolling. Period. When will he tell the media to "bring it on"!

Staff Sergeant Bagge is an inspiration for all of us. Sometimes WE ALL think we have it tough, when next it happens I will think of SSgt Bagge.

He may be giving his C-in-C a lesson in fortitude but something tells me his C-in-C knows a little bit about it.
