Extreme Flooding Situation Developing on the Susquehanna river, PA
NWS

Posted on 06/27/2006 2:28:23 PM PDT by janetjanet998

developing...the river may go into record flood and top the levees at Wilkes-Barre and other towns/cities ..at this time the NWS is saying the river will rise to 38-40 feet by thursday(which would be the 2nd highest crest)...the levee is at 41..however the crest may be higher then that and the NWS has been raising the crest forecast all day.

getting 2nd hand reports of local offcials saying the river may crest at 43 feet which would top the levee built after Agnes which crested at 40.9 feet ..

it all depends on how much rain they get upstream and it doesn;t look good a this point

Are there any Freepers in that area? What about you, Janet? Hope everyone there will be safe.

Years later after Agnes, there are still tires 30 feet up in the trees by the potomac river in Maryland. Most impressive. The thing I remember most is the animals that were flushed out of Rock Creek Park - you've never seen so many reptiles and mammals at once, I've heard fire fronts can be like that.

I'm on the West Branch of the Susquehanna in Williamsport. It doesn't look quite that bad yet here, but the possibility is certainly there.

We're downstream near the Conowingo Dam in MD, but safely up on a hill. Still, prayers for our neighbors and those in harm's way.

Oh my. Most of my family (parents, sister & fam, aunts & uncles, grandpa) live in Milton. My parents are actually on vacation right now down in MD. Maybe I should give them a call.

I was only 4 but I remember the 72 flood, my grandparents being evacuated and staying with us in Lewisburg (the water was well into their first floor), the watermarks on the buildings for so long.

I hope it's a nice HIGH hill. The reports sound terrible. Out here in Colorado we're in a terrible drought, but I guess that's better than a flood.

-Had 8 feet of water in the living room during Agnes(Kingston) . Some of my buds who lived close to the dikes had the water completely cover their houses . Where the levee was breached in Forty fort a lot of he houses were untouched . However many graves were unearthed in the Forty Fort cemetary and there were corpses and coffins floating around .

Stay safe up on the hill - hope you have supplies because it might be awhile before you get down.

Seriously - this could be bad down here in MD especially Havre de Grace and Port Deposit. Both hit hard in Agnes.

Harrisburg PA got a lot of flooding too as I recall.

BTW - me and some friends used to pontoon up on the river above the Conowingo Dam. What fun we had back then.

I hope it's a nice HIGH hill.

Oh it is, but do say a prayer for the folks down in Port Deposit, Perryville, and Havre de Grace. Those towns are right down on the water.
