Followup to N.Y. Cops In Pa. Fireworks Stakeouts (NYPD seizes cars of NYers who legally buy fireworks in PA)

New Yorkers are learning the hard way that an initiative to keep July 4th firecrackers out of the city means just what the warning signs on the highway say: "Transport fireworks, lose your vehicle."

The NYPD has now corralled 58 vehicles under Mayor Bloomberg's fireworks crackdown, officials said...

To get the message out, the city has eight 9-by-12-foot electronic signs that are rolled around the five boroughs and placed primarily at highways, bridges and tunnels.

"We're doing this to deter people from transporting illegal fireworks," said a law-enforcement source.

Police said 161 calls had been made to 311 during the initiative, although it is not clear how many calls led directly to vehicle seizures.

The mayor's office said more than 770 cases of illegal fireworks have been confiscated by the NYPD Vice Enforcement Division in conjunction with the city's Joint Fireworks Taskforce and more than 60 people have been arrested for possessing or trafficking illegal fireworks.

NYC has HOW many murderers every year? What, about a dozen?

Fireworks bans are downright silly in NYC--but they do make perfect sense out here in Souther California (where all open burn permits are suspended until further notice because of the high heat).

This is one issue that's a female/male thing. What is the attraction of lighting things off that go boom? I, as a woman, don't get it. Can a FREEPER guy please say it in a way that I can understand? Thank you.

Once they started confiscating property based on the WOD this sort of thing became ineviable. What next?

"We're here to collect you liver. You are an organ donor aren't you?"

"But I'm still using it!"

New Yorkers will turn each other in for fire works but not report street crime...what a contrast.

We're attracted to things that go "boom". It's no more complicated than that.

We're also attracted to women and are willing to slave away for decades to keep a few happy so cut us some slack!

Well I can't explain why I like it, but think of it like this. Tell me why buying new shoes is so satisfying? I only need one or two pair (dress and running).

And some folks from NYC will still say they love NYC.

No thanks. BTW the Maryland State Police does the same thing at VA and PA fireworks stands. Though I haven't heard of them confiscating cars........yet.

It is not.

I LOVE fireworks. We used to have a block party and set them off every year. I am sad that my children have been denied the experience.

All of the things I have that go boom involve having a Deer or some other animal fall down immediately afterward.

There are some things that can't be explained - just like my wife can't explain why she needs fifty pairs of shoes.
