58 Fireworks Cars Seized (No trial, no appeal – Celebrate freedom this Independence Day)

Followup to N.Y. Cops In Pa. Fireworks Stakeouts (NYPD seizes cars of NYers who legally buy fireworks in PA)

New Yorkers are learning the hard way that an initiative to keep July 4th firecrackers out of the city means just what the warning signs on the highway say: "Transport fireworks, lose your vehicle."

The NYPD has now corralled 58 vehicles under Mayor Bloomberg's fireworks crackdown, officials said...

< snip >

To get the message out, the city has eight 9-by-12-foot electronic signs that are rolled around the five boroughs and placed primarily at highways, bridges and tunnels.

"We're doing this to deter people from transporting illegal fireworks," said a law-enforcement source.

Police said 161 calls had been made to 311 during the initiative, although it is not clear how many calls led directly to vehicle seizures.

The mayor's office said more than 770 cases of illegal fireworks have been confiscated by the NYPD Vice Enforcement Division in conjunction with the city's Joint Fireworks Taskforce and more than 60 people have been arrested for possessing or trafficking illegal fireworks.

Our friends live on the intracoastal waterway canal, which was covered in algae so thick, it looked like a golf course.

That algae grows in the protected, brackish waters all around the Tidewater area: Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, Elizabeth River, James River, etc. Toward the end of summer, it starts to die, rots, and stinks like Hell.

Why the hell not? We're at war!

I think this is the best idea I've heard all week.

EVERYTHING's illegal in Maryland, even sparklers. I do remember, when I lived in Accomac, that many of the smaller country stores there sold things openly I could only buy under the counter in Fairfax.

One year in Fairfax my brother came up to me at the fireworks stand JUST as I was convincing the dealer to sell me the (illegal) fireworks that I wanted. I could see in his eyes that he actually had some, but was scoping me out to make sure I wasn't a cop. Bro came up at the tail end of the conversation & said "...Aren't Jumping Jacks illegal in this state?" Dealer's eyes slammed shut. "Nothing like that here, sorry."

"Bloomberg embodies the worst kind of nanny statism this country has to offer. He should be exiled."

Great idea. There used to be leper colonies in times of yore, so maybe we could start "little dictator" colonies to rid ourselves of their disease ridden hides.

I like it.

Yup - he's a bloominidiot, alright.

When I was growing up in NYC we all knew that fireworks were illegals, but most of the dads in my neighborhood were cops or firemen. We had some of the GREATEST fireworks displays from confiscated stuff..............

Maybe wrap a towel around its head and show the "terrorist" what real American gun powder can do.

Then shoot some holes in it.
By the way, a fine accompaniment to this is Bulleit Bourbon. I discovered it a few weeks ago. Really awesome. It goes so well with fireworks.

It must be by county in Maryland, because I can't imagine WalMart selling fireworks if they were illegal, especially in huge displays right as you come in the door. I was in the Pocomoke WalMart last week and nearly bought a big set of them.

I bet you were ready to kill your brother over that.

This is one issue that's a female/male thing. What is the attraction of lighting things off that go boom? I, as a woman, don't get it. Can a FREEPER guy please say it in a way that I can understand? Thank you.

Eh..hard to explain, really. Men do things that defy explanation sometimes, kind of like with underwear. A woman will go to the clothing store to buy underwear even though she doesn't need any at the moment.

A man will continue to wear underwear until all that's left is the elastic waistband and a few shreds of cloth covering the crotch.

Sometimes it's just better not to ask such questions.

I'm in Richmond and haven't been to Virginia Beach on or around the 4th in over 20 years. That said, way back then we set off a significant amount over Back Bay (from a private residence).

I would guess that it's pretty restricted along the Boardwalk in the main part of town. But, probably less so down at Sandbridge.

We go to the Outer Banks (NC) every year. LOTS of fireworks there all the time.

So, what happens if you rent a vehicle to transport your fireworks? Does the city confiscate your Avis car? Interesting...

I'm not sure if the laws are the same everywhere, but as exampled on COPs, the LEOs in Florida only seize vehicles if you own them outright.

As viewed on COPs, the Florida LEOs spend more time seizing vehicles than they do eating donuts. But they always ask first to determine if the person they are arresting is the owner of the vehicle and if they own the vehicle outright. My guess, in Florida anyway, they can't or won't seize the vehicle if the person is making payments on it, or if they are in a rented/borrowed vehicle.

NYC cops have confiscated fireworks for as long as I can remember, but not like this and never the cars.
