NEW YORK Knight Ridder executives are busy packing up their offices today after shareholders officially approved the McClatchy acquisition during an emotional annual meeting on Monday.
By about 4 p.m. Pacific Standard Time, the company will no longer exist, confirmed Polk Laffoon, Knight Ridders vice president of corporate relations.
Employees at Knight Ridder headquarters will get their final paycheck today as they move out of the building located in downtown San Jose. Everybody has to clear out, Laffoon said.
Only Tony Ridder, chairman and CEO of Knight Ridder, and an administrative assistant will maintain an office in the building for another month.
The lease will be transferred to McClatchy. Calls to McClatchy were not returned this afternoon. McClatchys CEO Gary Pruitt said earlier that his companys headquarters will remain in Sacramento.
During yesterdays annual meeting shareholders elected three Knight Ridder board members for a three-year term, which was just a formality.

Good news? Not if you are one of the ex-employees.......
Its a cruel world out there on the streets, hippies! Plan accordingly. Cancel the NY Times, Greenpeace, Planned Parenthood memberships and start the belt tightening.
"Knight Ridder executives are busy packing up their offices today ..."
Alert security to bring brown cardboard boxes, to collect and destroy the credit cards, to escort the rats to the parking lot, to get the parking lot cards, to...
8-))
No more Tofu-Alfalfa Sprout Shakes?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?...........
Yet...the papers will continue to be published. And so it goes. The former Knight-Ridder papers will be on customers' doorsteps in the morning, and most of the staff at those papers will still have jobs.
Time changes things.
LOL. Nah they'll get hooked up at the university campus newspaper or something.
>>Good news...<<
I'd feel better about this if there were all kinds of new responsible media replacing them. Blogs and message boards are like Wikipedia - not sufficient.
Scrape any stickers away from the vehicle which allows entry to the parking lot.
Then deduct the cost of the box from their last paycheck.
What is it that some folks are saying about immigration reform? No bill is better than a bad bill.
Likewise for the MSM. No media is better than bad media.

I don't know what I would do without live coverage of slow speed chases... :(
We welcome our long lost friend back to Florida...........
Maybe this is why home foreclosure rates are going up. Leftists are getting laid off at newspapers...
See ya later.
I get a little concerned by people who say their ONLY source of information is FR...
McClatchy is apparently willing to fire anybody, except
David Littlefield, Jose Hernandez and Ryan Vogelsong!
(sorry for the inside baseball stuff)
ya just gotta go
so, get the h#ll outta here
bwhahahahaha
I'm curious, how many people have you heard/read say this?
BTW, have you ever looked at multiple newspapers, side by side?
If so, you may have noticed that the articles are (my estimate) at least 75-80% the same (sometimes the article title is somewhat different), because the newspapers are all carrying the same AP, Reuters, API left-slanted stories.
I'm sure you have noticed that there are many posts of the same articles on FR (again, sometimes with somewhat different titles), even though the posters are pulling the articles from their local newspapers?
Just another example of the fact that the source for the different newspapers are AP, Reuters and API.
(Note: Here's one of the leftist's favorite fake arguments: "Well, if you're seeing the same issue covered in newspapers across the nation, it has to be true, right? I mean, what's the probability of that many newspapers reporting on the same issue? Clearly the American people are sick to death of (fill in latest leftist issue)!"
So, in my view, FR being someone's only source of information isn't a critical worry.
Especially if you consider that at FR, they are likely to get a wide range of comments, opinions, factual corrections to the article, input from experts and other valid sources, as well as links to a mind boggling array of related information/sources on the Internet.
They are also able to join in the effort by FR members to root out the truth, and ensure that as many people as possible come to the realization that the MSM has been feeding them leftist propaganda (and consciously not reporting on other issues) for years (and the MSM doesn't intend to change).
IMHO, that is the beauty of FR, which sets it far and above most other available information sources.
