Democrats are unable to embrace the war on terror or the fight against islamists because they would view it as an endorsement of President Bush, and they are too full of visceral hate to be able to do that....hatred for our President and hate for our country has come to dominate their lives.

Any intellectual framework that a book such as this provides will be lost on the rank and file Dems who have embraced a hatred of America as their North Star, and will drag their once-coherent party down to irrelevancy as a result.

Good riddance.

It also amazes me that a book is required in order for the Left to see what the rest of us find completely obvious....the Islamists want to kill us all and bring Sharia law to the USA....they are not interested in congenial discourse, they are only interested in their goal and however many die in the process of achieving that goal, well, so be it.

Such a simple enemy to understand, yet many on the left have so much trouble articulating the threat.... a true reflection of the vacuitiy of their souls.

"Democrats had ceded to the Republicans the preeminent issue of our time, the threat of jihadist terrorism."

The Democrats, in a mind bogglinmg display of ultra stupidity, have tried to cast jihadist terrorism as a criminal matter that should be handled with courts and lawyers, while depicting President Bush as a warmonger and the biggest threat to world peace (Mutha, et al).

Incredibly, after 9/11 they expect to get elected on that platform. And those pea-brained numb-skull idiots call President Bush stupid.

Thanks for your posts and comments. I try to explain this to my "friends" and relatives, but they "don't want to talk politics", which means my politics or a different point of view from theirs.

I know lots of people who are just simply unhinged about Bush. I try to tell them that Bush is not the issue, that Islamofascism is the issue and that it wants us dead right now. They don't get it.

To me, it's a depressing time with part of Western civilizaztion dying right in front of our eyes.

To the left, President Bush, and Christians of all political persuasion, are the real threat to humanity.

If they haven't figured out why they've lost the last 2 election cycles after holding countless town hall and MEET UP sessions live on C-SPAN, then they don't deserve to be in power.

Even now the dems are denigrating the arrest of the Miami Seven. Defending those miscreants and suggesting they hadn't really done anything wrong.

They'd prefer to wait till the Sears Tower was in flames before arresting the plotters.

I've been saying all along, and will say it again, that 9-11 is still THE issue of the past couple of elections and will be THE issue of this one--sorry illegal immigration, abortion, Dubai, Diebold, etc. groupies.

The liberals simply cannot make themselves agree to any kind of coherent strategy because in their hearts they believe we deserve what's coming to us from the jihadists.

I've resisted that conclusion, because it's just too knee-jerk--"They hate America, we love it"--and easy. I can't tell if they hate America, but I do believe they've shown they hate THIS America, and they dream of what it COULD be--aka the USSR but with all the "Mistakes" corrected.

But that's beside the point. The liberals' dirty little secret, which they simply can't cop to, is that they all believe we had 9-11 coming. We are the Evil World Power that causes hunger and poverty because we all have ipods (so do they, but, well, it's different, they listen to 60's protest music on theirs) and watch TV (so do they but, well, it's different, because Seinfeld is so Ironic and Depserate Housewives is about female empowerment), and we eat more food and use more oil than anyone else, and by Marxist guidelines that means we're taking that stuff from someone else. So Al Qaeda (even though it's funded by the rich) is a Revolutionary War-like struggle against The Powerful, and they are only using violence because they are Angry that Their Truth can't be heard over the drones of our TVs and ipods and SUV's.

The libs can't come up with a position to fight terrorism because while they want terrorism to end, they don't want to do any more evil to stop it--evil being actually commiting acts of violence that will kill more innocent bystanders, which happens in any war, like it or not.

They are the political contingent of those who only want to deal with what they WANT to be true as opposed to what IS. And they haven't the spirit to fight against attackers they think have a point. So this writer's attempt to get the libs into the war is doomed to failure, unless the libs can find a way to prove that Al Qaeda is actually made up of rich white guys, preferably from Texas.

Beinart has crafted an exceedingly well-written, well-researched and well-reasoned brief to show liberals why taking a strong, enlightened stand against today's strain of totalitarianism is not just consistent with the liberal tradition, but is crucial to protecting and advancing liberal values (not to mention the security of our nation).

To even the Lieberman wing of the Democratic Party national security is an after thought. Put a fork in them!

A true liberal thinks reality is whatever he decides it SHOULD be.....given his/her obviously god-like capacity, because their intention is so "good", they are utterly incapable of perceiving how or why any one might want them dead.

Western Liberals will always see defenders of Western Civilization as a greater evil than enemies of Western Civilization. That's what Western Liberals do.

We need runoff elections, so that some third party can rise up and replace the dems.

The amazing thing to me about the Democrats in recent decades is that if they had just remained a centrist party they would probably have an unbeatable majority, either already have it or soon have it. The demographics are on their side. The Republicans can do well with Hispanics, but the Democrats will always have an edge with that fast-growing group.

So what did the Democrats do at the same time they were accruing this growing demographic advantage? They went insane. They adopted the the politics of treason and socialism. Like their friends the Palestinians, they are missing opportunities of historic proportions.

The DNC is pure Communism and the Country is not. The only semi-hawk is Lieberman and look how popular he is in that asylum.

There's no evidence the Democrats are listening to Beinart. To do so, the party would have to give up everything that has characterized it since Vietnam and the extreme Left is not going to surrender its life and death grip over the party. We'll witness the Democrats continue their slow slide to political extinction beginning with another election loss in November.

"and will drag their once-coherent party down to irrelevancy as a result."

Well, no one's ever accused the Democrat Party of being coherent. Will Rogers said "I don't belong to an organized party, I'm a Democrat."

But, the Dems were never anti-Americans. Hubert Humphrey and other s kicked the commies out of the Democrat-Farmer-Labor Party in Minnesota in the late 40's (at the same time Nixon was fighting communist influence).

Now, the Dem mainstream, Jack Murtha, future Majority Leader candidate, is anti-American. This is electoral death for the vast American majority. The Dems will elect more than their share, due to inertia and lack of alternatives, but this anti-Americanism is catching up to them.

  1. The Democrat Party no longer has guiding principles but is instead an alliance of grievances. It's a collection of one-issue voters. Abortion, the environment, "womens' rights", free housing for the poor, socialized medicine, "underpaid teachers" unions, and trial lawyers with a vested interest in the "little man's" ability to sue deep pockets.
  2. At the heart of every grievance is the presumption that something is seriously wrong with the United States of America. This blinds their followers to what real evil is. They can't concede that keeping women from being murdered by the Taliban is a good thing if the President who led the effort doesn't fawn over their causes. Conversely, a President who gave lip service to their causes could violate the real rights of women with impunity.
  3. You cannot take a bunch of people who believe the USA is evil and expect them to support that same country. They can't fly its flag, can't recite its Pledge of Allegiance, can't sing its National Anthem or recognize its defenders.
