Steve Westly lost the Democratic gubernatorial primary nearly three weeks ago, but his words continue to haunt party nominee Phil Angelides.
The California Republican Party launched two ads Friday in the governor's race, one of which trumpets Westly's tax-hike accusations against Angelides during the primary.
The negative ad goes through a list of Westly comments, such as his statement in May that Angelides is proposing a "tax on darn near anybody." It concludes by asking, "What if Steve Westly was right?"
The state Republican Party has collected major checks in the past month, including $2 million from Stockton developer Alex Spanos, $1.5 million from Univision Chairman and Chief Executive A. Jerrold Perenchio and $972,000 from Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger launched his own pair of ads three days after the June 6 primary, including one attacking Angelides over taxes. Schwarzenegger's campaign would not say how long the ads were scheduled to air.
But California Republican Party chairman Duf Sundheim said he informed the governor's campaign that the party would start airing its own ads. That likely gives the governor's camp a financial breather to rebuild its war chest.
Sundheim said the Westly ad was intended to convey that "even strong Democrats believe that Angelides' plan is a road to disaster."
Angelides campaign strategist Bill Carrick dismissed the use of primary attacks as a "cliched kind of thing." He said Democratic voters will know that Westly has endorsed Angelides.

I saw that add last night. I thought it was pretty funny. But I couldn't find a "paid for by Republicans" disclaimer on it anywhere...?
Angelidas is a dead liberal walking, politically speaking of course. Arnold is going to wrap the tax and spend anchor around angelidas' scrawny little neck and drown him with it.
Gov. Ehrlich in Maryland needs to follow this lead. Go to Doug Duncan's website before it's taken down and get all the anti-O'Malley articles.
In some places, it already looks like a third-world country.
I saw that ad yesterday. It said, paid for by the Republican party.
Man, Angelides scares the crap out of me; makes Grey-out look good.
I saw this ad last night, it was great!
I live in the Sacramento area, and was surprised a few years ago to be driving around a community in So. Cal. and every business had signs up in Korean. But it isn't just "cultural diversity," but deteriorating infrastructure and communities. Sadly, most of what third-world nations export into the US is their own poverty, and it has resulted in a deterioration of the quality of life in many California communities. It isn't "racist" to make this observation -- it's just the truth.
