Starbuck's Fat Cup of Trouble

Fat cup of trouble

By Edward Hudgins

Published June 26, 2006

Starbucks, of all enterprises, is the latest victim of food fascists. It is ironic that the Center for Science in the Public Interest is attacking the politically correct, rainforest-friendly, self-styled socially responsible Seattle-based corporation for clogging the arteries of Americans.

Starbucks, of course, is famous for offering its customers many choices. It's impossible to order just "a cup of coffee." There are two or three coffees of the day chosen from some three-dozen blends from around the world. You can get them in regular, decaf or half-caf and three different sizes: tall, grande and venti. Maybe you want a latte, cappuccino, Frappuccino, Macchiato, Americano or straight espresso? Perhaps you want it extra hot or with ice? Or with one of a dozen favors, malts, mochas or toppings? Or go for their teas. It's a consumer's dream.

But Starbucks is very conscious of its customers' health concerns. That's why it offers whole, skim or soy milk. Watching carbs? Try your drink "breve" with half-and-half. Watching calories? Order your latte "skinny" so you won't fill out when you ask for "extra foam." Or forgo the whipped cream on the more milkshake-like beverages. Or order sugar-free vanilla or hazelnut syrup. And just skip the many cake offerings altogether.

Critics charge many Starbucks products are high in calories and high in fat, especially those tasty trans-fats that are really bad for us. So what? Starbucks offers everyone a choice. If you don't like the venti vanilla caramel Macchiato with extra whip, don't order it. In any case, Starbucks lists on its Web site and brochures in its stores the nutritional information about its products.

But that's not enough for the self-appointed health police...

It's impossible to order just "a cup of coffee." I walk in and say "Gimme your largest regular, black." and I have it in a few moments.

Therein lies the problem. Fascists like these so-called "critics" only like choice when it's their choice. None of this has anything to do with health, it's all about the food-nazis psychotic desire to rule over everybody else.

Personally, I hate Starbucks!

Their coffee just eats away my stomach lining!

Every time I do (did) that, the person behind the counter would lisp, "vente?" or some such nonsense. I would simply smile and say, "sorry, I don't speak French."

Yes, it is people's choice. I have no problem, however, if food manufacturers and establishments are forced to make available to the public the fat and caloric content in what they sell us. Then, we can make an informed decision.

I walk in and say "Gimme your largest regular, black."

And they point to an African American fellow and say "He comes in a lot."

That's a pretty good response.

I might try - "Do I look French to you?" If I ever frequented their shop.

"Gimme your largest regular, black."

That's funny. Call me petty, but I refuse to use their cute little names for the size of their drinks. I always ask for a "large coffee". I was in a Starbucks the other day and someone going through the drive through ordered some triple whip surprise something or other and then said, "at 125 degrees". I asked the guy behind the counter if you could order by temperature now. He kind of smiled and said, "Well, you can, but you get what you get."

Funny thing is, I speak (barely) passable Italian. Only when I'm in Italy, or on Taylor St. in Chicago, however.

If I don't understand, it's automatically French.

Ah, the death personal responsibility.

"But, your Honor," the person whined, "Starbucks MADE me have the extra-vente-sized, triple-fatted, mocha-berry, caramel whipped cream with extra sugar coffe-flavored liquid. It's THEIR fault I'm fat!"

As if the store used a funnel to pour it down their gullets, rather than theperson having to tke five minutes to order it.

Food-nazis focus entirely too much on the fat content of foods. Sometimes they redirect their gaze to sugar, but rarely do they bother noting that it's the starches that are killing you.

Has to do with what your body does to starch ~ turns it into sugar, turns the sugar into triglycerides and other nasties (unless you exercise), and turns all that stuff into cholesterol.

it's all about the food-nazis psychotic desire to rule over everybody else.

There is only a small degree of separation between the world view of these folks and the Maoists. While they certainly are not murderers, the degree of control they seek over people's daily lives is similar. If "group responsibility" replaces individual responsibility we will have given up freedom without a fight.
