4th of July Recipes (Vanity)

Posted on 06/25/2006 8:40:33 AM PDT by proudofthesouth

The 4th of July weekend will be here in a week and I thought that its now time for Freepers to post their favorite summertime recipes.

Here's mine:

Crock Pot Pork Shoulder

1 or 2 pork shoulders (depending upon the size of your crockpot )

*Maple Grove Farms of Vermont Low Carb Sugar Free Hickory Marinade and Basting Sauce

Place pork in a greased crockpot and pour entire bottle (if using 2 shoulders; half bottle if using 1) over the pork.

About twice an hour spoon the sauce over the pork. Cook for about 6 hours (approx).

*For those of you who don't like the sugary sweet bbq sauce made by the major brands, this is a GREAT sauce. I stumbled across it at Target. Its not sweet at all even though it contains Splenda. If you would like their website address, email me.

BTW, if you have a good creamy coleslaw recipe, please email it to me. I'm looking for one without sugar.

Yeap, they are actually called toes. I learned that by making a HUGE mistake a few years back.

I had a recipe for a garlic black pepper sauce that was put on sirloin steak with nappa cabbage.

The recipe calls for 20 toes of garlic, I thought they meant 20 heads of garlic - let's just say even this garlic lover couldn't handle that sauce!!!

Your recipe for pork tenderloin is similar to my asian beef.

ASIAN BEEF (feeds ten)

1 London Broil (2.5 lbs)
1 cup Soy Sauce
1/4 cup of fresh grated ginger
5 medium garlic cloves, minced
1 tablespoon of Asian Five Spice Powder
1/4 cup of Sake

Combine all ingredients in a gallon size ziplok bag and let marinade for 48 hrs, stirring ingredients twice a day.

Grill over medium heat 10-15 minutes per side.

Slice very thin across the grain of the meat and serve with horseradish sauce.

PS- Do Not Overcook. The marinade does most of the cooking. The grilling adds that wonderful barbecue flavor

I think differant places in the country tend to use differant words.
I say head of garlic and clove of garlic. Toes was a new one for me.

It is TDF! Go to allrecipes and look up the recipe. There are LOTS of suggestions in the reviews for adjustments and substitutions to suit your taste. Like craisins and cashews for the raisins & sunflower seeds.

could someone please post a recipe (or freepmail it) for macaroni and cheese.
I'd like it to be the kind that you bake, so it's all creamy inside and crunchy on top. We've tried some recipes but the cheese mixture never really sticks to the pasta it just sort of gets all clumped together like cottage cheese or curdled milk. Also, recipes with any American processed cheese are out - not because I don't like them (I know velveeta makes a mean mac and cheese), but they're impossible to get here in Spain. thanks. happy 4th of July American freepers.

I have a recipe very similar to this one, from my mother in law, she called them Texas baked beans, they are the hit of every party I take them to. I cook them in the oven for 4 to 5 hours, and they are so thick when done, my daughter and I actually use the leftovers as a sandwich filling! Sounds gross, I know but really good.

Corn on the cob on the grill.

And for a really tasty and easy method, try this. Soak unhusked corn in salty water for at least four hours. This helps the corn to cook on the grill without burning. After your corn is done, just peel and eat. The stings just slide off with the husks.

Independence Day may not be celebrated without hand-cranked peach ice cream. In my house, its the law.

While it might sound odd, simmering the peach peels and pits in the cream really intensifies the flavor of the peaches. This technique is good to use when you don't have the absolutely ripest and juciest peaches available-- you can still get a nice peachy ice cream. Its even better when you have great peaches.

The vanilla scented peaches topping the ice cream are optional, they are fine for a dinner party but are a little too fancy for a good old fashioned hand-cranked Fourth of July celebration.
PEACH ICE CREAM WITH VANILLA-SCENTED PEACHES

To make it really really authentic, get a cow and hustle the pail of milk right over to the ice cream maker as soon as Bessy gives it up. ;-).YUM.

Nothing beats a simple Pea Salad for a picnic:

Two cans of green peas, drained

The rest of the ingredients are proportional to your taste:

chopped onions
chopped boiled eggs
real bacon bits
shredded cheddar cheese

Moisten with real mayonaise.

I made this this weekend to rave reviews: Take a flounder fillet, place a chunk of crabmeat in the centre, roll up and wrap with bacon. Put a toothpick through it to hold it together, wrap it in foil sprayed with Pam and slap on the grill. Fast, easy and yummy!

You are right about homemade ice cream and July 4.

I'm going to try this recipe.

BTW one of my favorite homemade ice creams is banana.

I do baked beans this way, too, except I use KC Masterpiece Original Barbecue sauce instead of ketchup. Delicious!

We use ground cumin. We soak it in cheapo beer, a dash of lime, and onions overnight and smack 'em on the CHARCOAL (I'll be damned if I use gas) grill the next day sprinkled with cumin.
