PROVIDENCE -- With pats on the back from Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic minority leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, and other dignitaries, Women Ending Hunger had a kind of coming-out party at the Rhode Island Community Food Bank yesterday.
Women Ending Hunger -- about 120 women business and community leaders dedicated to the food bank -- is launching a more-public phase of a year-long campaign to boost the food bank.
Karen Davis, vice president of community relations at Hasbro and one of the leaders of the group, noted during a late-afternoon reception at the food bank, on Niantic Avenue, that Providence was tied with New Orleans, ranked third among American cities for having the most children in poverty.
"And so 120 of us got together and decided we were going to do something about that," Davis declared.
The group works on increasing access to food assistance and government nutrition programs, providing opportunities for food-bank clients to get nutrition education, and giving financial and volunteer support.
"How sad for our country that this is necessary," Pelosi said in a brief address at the reception. "But how beautiful that you are doing it."
Pelosi, who represents a district in San Francisco but whose mother's family hails from Pawtucket, took the opportunity of a political trip to Rhode Island to tour the nonprofit food bank and laud Women Ending Hunger.
Pelosi later attended a fundraiser at the East Greenwich home of Michael and Elizabeth Perik, friends and longtime supporters of Rhode Island Rep. Patrick Kennedy.
Along with Kennedy and other Democratic luminaries, Pelosi served some red-meat political rhetoric to an apparently like-minded audience of about 60 at the reception.
They linked what was described as a rise in hunger and poverty in Rhode Island and nationally with the policies of the Republican administration.
And there were several excited references to Pelosi's ambition to become speaker of the House.
But a prominent Republican representative was on hand, too, in the person of Stephanie Chafee, wife of Republican U.S. Sen. Lincoln Chafee. Mrs. Chafee is the founder and chairwoman of Women Ending Hunger.
". . . Help us fill these shelves this summer," Chafee exhorted the crowd.
Referring to government-subsidized meals for children in the public schools, she said, "Remember, they're out of school. They're not getting breakfast. They're not getting lunch.
In addition to publicly championing the nutritional well-being of ordinary Rhode Islanders, Pelosi and Kennedy were preoccupied with the mother's milk of politics: money.
Kennedy showed a reporter $400,000 in checks in envelopes that he was passing to Pelosi and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in the hopes that Democrats win the House, Pelosi becomes speaker, and Kennedy's position on the House Appropriations Committee is strengthened. That way, he said, he can get more aid for Rhode Island.
"I've raised more money than any one of my [House] colleagues" except for the leadership, boasted Kennedy, who used to be chairman of the DCCC.
"When Nancy becomes speaker, it's going to help me be a better congressman for Rhode Island if she knows how hard I worked to get her elected speaker. . .," Kennedy said.
Said a grateful Pelosi, "He's the best."

You'll be a better congressman when you get and stay SOBER, and I sincerely hope the 'Rats get their tails whipped in November, normal Americans who hate al-Qaeda do not need the Botox Queen as Speaker of the House!

Did they serve food and beverages? If so, did they invite some hungry children? Or at least give them the doggie bags on the way out? Or were the illegal staff scarfing down all the leftovers in the kitchen?
