Former New York Times Executive Editor Howell Raines has leveled a shocking charge against Fox News: The leading cable news network makes up its stories.
In his new autobiography "The One That Got Away,” Raines – who, ironically, resigned over made-up stories at the Times – writes:
"Fox, by its mere existence, undercuts the argument that the public is starved for ‘fair’ news, and not just because Fox shills for the Republican Party and panders to the latest of America’s periodic religious manias. The key to understanding Fox News is to grasp the anomalous fact that its consumers know its ‘news’ is made up.
"It matters not when critics point this out to Foxite consumers because they’ve understood it from the outset. That’s why they’re there.”
Further on in the book he attacks Fox again:
"Fox Television showed us the future - outright lies and paranoid opinions packaged as news under the oversight of Rupert [Murdoch], a flagrant pirate, and Roger Ailes, an unprincipled Nixon thug.”
After the conservative Web site Newsbusters ran several excerpts from Raines’ book, one e-mailer wrote:
"Fox may have a conservative slant but it is usually quite clear when they go from straight reporter mode to giving their own two bits worth.”
Another e-mail says: "I guess if there’s anyone who should recognize ‘made-up’ news when he sees it, it would be Howell Raines.”
Raines was executive editor at the Times when the Jayson Blair scandal erupted in 2003. Blair, it was revealed, had fabricated stories, inventing quotes and even entire interviews. Raines resigned about a month later, after less than two years at the job.
For being generally humorless folks, liberals say some pretty funny stuff.
As he spoke, Howell Raines choked up. Standing on his porch overlooking the tobacco fields and cattle pastures.
There's the problem. To a lib commentary and the truthful reporting are one in the same. "I feel that this is the way things are/should be, therefore that's the way they are/should be."
This is Scrapple Face right? No way that Raines and the NY Times want to even use those words and remind people of their legacy.
It would be like Bubba accusing Dubya of having more than just pizza delivered to the oval office.
Just another ham-fisted attempt to keep the benighted "brainier-than-thou" folks away from FoxNews.

Of course not!
That they do. It's meant to be a preemptive offense tactic, putting the other party automatically on the defensive.
It's also very transparent AND it's losing it's effectiveness because it's been overused.
Howlin' Howell Raines should have a keen ear for that sort of fraudulent news reporting, one would think.
Not to say that Fox does or does not "make up" news reports. It is just that the estimable Mr. Raines is not necessarily the best messenger to deliver this bit of news.
After all, he does have something of a credibility problem.

Last night, John Gibson of FOX, recited a list of "made-up news" that the Gray Lady (our motto: "All the news that fits we print") has printed in the last few years. The Times is not worthy of my parakeet's cage.

If so, it's a shocking charge. However, in additon to the fact that from this source it's mere "pot calling kettle black" stuff, the salient point to me is that "half the truth can be a very big lie."The "If it bleeds it leads," "man bites dog" criteria for journalism are not remotely politicaly neutral. They are in fact actually radical. They lead directly to the coverage we see of Iraq, consisting of nothing but bad news. We get the same sort of coverage of our own country from the same people, but since we are in America and not in Iraq we are far more tempted to assume that the news from Iraq actually represents Iraqi reality than we are to assume that people in America are generally cowering in corners just because somewhere in America someone was murdered yesterday.
So even if Mr. Raines were able to document that Fox News actually made up a story once, the driveby media are not thereby exonerated of leftwing bias. It oozes from their every pore.
Kind of late for Mr. Raines to throw a hissy fit over getting canned, isn't it?
Ya know! I have been listening to Alan Colms, Jeraldo Riviera, Greta VanSustern, Juan Williams, Mara Liason, and others on FOX News and have noticed that they ARE shilling for the Republicans? Maybe it's time to clean house at FOX to get rid of these right leaning reporters????
Being called a partisan shill by Howell Raines is akin to being called ugly by a toad.
The same new york slimes that gives classified info out to the public no matter how much it hurts the troops, the pres and the war we are in. The same outhouse paper that that wrote during ww 2, we should not hurt hitler no matter what he did to people.Hitler never attacked us, right? You know what you can do with the new york slimes , use it where the sun just don't shine!
Agreed and also the Ass Press needs to be sent over to its leftist buddies at nyslimes. I am very fed up with Fox claiming to be fair and balanced when only the most unavoidably obvious good news gets a brief report and the rest is garbage.
