U.S. Military Intercepts Missile in Test

The Associated Press Thursday, June 22, 2006; 8:03 PM

HONOLULU -- A Navy ship on Thursday intercepted a medium-range missile warhead above the earth's atmosphere off Hawaii in the latest test of the U.S. missile defense program, the military said.

The Missile Defense Agency said the test had been scheduled for months and was not prompted by indications that North Korea was planning to test launch a long-range missile.

The USS Shiloh detected a medium-range missile after it was launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai, then fired a Standard Missile-3 interceptor.

The interceptor shot down the target warhead after it separated from its rocket booster, more than 100 miles above the Pacific Ocean and 250 miles northwest of Kauai, the agency said in a statement.

The test marked the seventh time in eight attempts the military has successfully shot down a missile target with an interceptor fired from a ship.

Seeing as how it takes N Korea weeks to fuel up their ICBM, I think we should take it out on the launch pad.

I wonder if we could drop something from space and make it look like a shooting star just accidently hit the launch pad?

Spend all those billions developing a ballistic missile only to discover that you can't possibly build enough to saturate the new missile defense systems that we're going to start building.

RWR, still wasting the money of communists and socialists worldwide. His vision has stretched well beyond the physical world.

...then fired a Standard Missile-3 interceptor.

Note to military: You need to come up with a cooler name for this missile.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1654162/posts Also here with a more sensational headline. I really doubt we will risk losing face by a potential miss on a dummy test missile that probably won't be launched. JMHO.

"... there is also an article that we fully intend to shoot down North Korea's missile when they test."
----

I would tread very lightly about any expectation that the US might shoot down an NK missile test. There is a lot of talk about this on both sides, and I believe we've got the ability to do it. However there is a major cost/benefit analysis that would have to be taken into account and I don't think anyone who is privy to that analysis is talking.

What I'm certain about is that President Bush won't be consulted as to whether we should shoot it down AFTER the launch - he's already implemented a decision that he's relayed to the field commanders if they launch. That decision might be changed BEFORE a launch, but the president won't be directly involved in while any NK test is going on.

Personally, I'd much prefer we just bomb the launch pad, AFPhys.

Way back when JC was still in basic training, I was a headquarters artillery chart operator; the basic sequence of fire was one short, one long, bracket and hit dead center.

Now that the technology has demonstrated a seven of eight success rate on missiles it would seem that a knock-down is more than a possibility.

I know what you mean. I'm feeling pretty militant about this myself, but when Rumsfield was asked about that possibility just a day or two ago, he commented that we'd have to take out more than just one target in that event.
