The Associated Press Thursday, June 22, 2006; 8:03 PM

HONOLULU -- A Navy ship on Thursday intercepted a medium-range missile warhead above the earth's atmosphere off Hawaii in the latest test of the U.S. missile defense program, the military said.

The Missile Defense Agency said the test had been scheduled for months and was not prompted by indications that North Korea was planning to test launch a long-range missile.

The USS Shiloh detected a medium-range missile after it was launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai, then fired a Standard Missile-3 interceptor.

The interceptor shot down the target warhead after it separated from its rocket booster, more than 100 miles above the Pacific Ocean and 250 miles northwest of Kauai, the agency said in a statement.

The test marked the seventh time in eight attempts the military has successfully shot down a missile target with an interceptor fired from a ship.

Excellent; there is also an article that we fully intend to shoot down North Korea's missile when they test.

If Reagan were still here, he'd like this.

The Missile Defense Agency said the test had been scheduled for months.....

No doubt we have known for months the NKs were up to something with their missiles. I really don't believe the timing of the test is coincidental.

Peace through strength.

Our beloved former president may have loved more seeing the grade school tantrum Kim Jong Il must have thrown when this news reached him.

Yeah... Spend all those billions developing a ballistic missile only to discover that you can't possibly build enough to saturate the new missile defense systems that we're going to start building.

Sucks to be him.

Cynic that I am, I suspect that given the current situation with North Korea, 'success' is guaranteed.

Last night, I watched how casually flippant Nora O'Donnell was over Larry Eagleberger's scenario of simply launching cruise missiles to take out the rocket... right on the pad. Eagleberger knows the ramifications of such a 'signatured' response would probably trigger a full-scale invasion of SKorea... and you could tell by his demeanor. I'm sure he had this in mind before giving his answer. O'Donnell. on the other hand, almost seemed giddy and I'm sure had NO CLUE as to the wide-scale carnage should that might ensue.

The woman is a damn fool.

Yep. Anybody got a listing of the Congresscritters who have opposed SDI? Those that are still in office who are seeking re-election this November should be beat about the head with this.......

I hope it get's intercepted when it's about 10 feet after the launch. Or less.
