> But you couldn't get me to use that rifle as a sniper!

Here's another option, so long as Honor and superstition are considerations: pack it in thermite and vaporize the damned thing. Or melt it down, draw it into wire, twist the wire into cable, wrap the cable around an iron bomb and drop it into the middle of a crowd of jihadis.

If the weapon is to be a symbol of Honor, it must *regain* it's honor. If it cannot regain it's honor, it must be put down, as one would put down a beloved family dog that now has rabies.

> But I think that model has been replaced.

I'm not a military guy. But "replaced" is a slippery concept. The M1911A1 was replaced. The M-14 was replaced. How many soldiers in the US military, when given the chance, would select these "replaced" weapons? Just because something is old doesn't mean you throw it away.

> hence the samurai's near-mysticism with the katana, and the soldiers' awe in recovering this particular tool

And the Viking's practice of "killing" a sword (typically by bending it beyond usefulness) and burying it with it's master. On the surface an odd practice, given that swords were Big Ticket Items in their day.

Agreed. My teacher is an from an old samurai family.

This philosophical weapon principal you mention is perhaps the most important one for America at this time. Thank you for mentioning it. He teaches me this:

What goes around, comes around.

I was with Fox 2/4 in the Gulf War as Fox's Weapons Platoon Sergeant. As Marine snipers say: "If you run, you will only die tired."

Villalobos held the rifle in his hands and fell silent. He held it low, cradling it and examined the chipped paint jobs applied by Marines over the years. The Unertl scope was missing, replaced by a Tasco, but otherwise, the rifle was in good working order.

Bet the Jihadi shooter (wouldn't call him a true sniper, couldn't figure out how to use the Unertl.
