Big-A$$ Hunk of Plane PING
Looks like a giant lawn dart.
Mnay years ago, as a contractor, I worked on a hanger at Travis AFB used for these things......... Talk about huge. These things are awsome.
Is this what you saw?
Is that the worlds largest pitot tube or did someone shoot it with a suction cup dart?
That is a telemetry antenna. This first flight is used as a test (of course) and the antenna sends data to ground for the test team to monitor aircraft performance.
I live under the flight path to Travis. I call my wife, who's at home, and occasionally you can hear the whine of a C-5 going over; it drowns out my wife's voice on the phone. I love it (the sound of the C-5, not it drowning out my wife's voice).
The day after the A380 was reported to have a wing snapped during stress testing. Cheers to American aerospace engineers!
Do you remember the hangar number? I will bet it was either Building 810 or 818.
Hey, I work at Travis!!
Actually the A380 wing test was several months ago. Someone bumped an older article on it.
You're hearing the sound of freedom.
It still looks like a pitot tube.
Or a dart.

And a story:
Okay, (but I did say "reported", and I seem to get my news more and more from FR).
When the engines are replaced by GE CF6-80's C-5's will no longer have their distinctive sound. They will sound pretty similar to the 747-400 which has the same engine.
Nevermind, I see you said someone bumped it.
