For Democrats, a Delicate Balance on Iraq
The Washington Post ^ | 6/20/06 | Charles Babington and Jonathan Weisman

Posted on 06/21/2006 8:48:56 AM PDT by alex

Debate over Iraq will dominate the Senate this week, with Democrats scrambling to find a Goldilocks solution: not too hot on withdrawing U.S. troops quickly, but not so cold as to alienate large numbers of Democratic voters furious about the war and eager to bring the Americans home...

This is an unremarkable piece on the Senate. But it is a nice illustration of the well established pattern: when the press discusses Republican policies the talk is about whether it is good or bad for the Country, when Dims' policies are discussed it is all about image and impression.

It is really nice thing to see that even the braid-dead journos could not force themselves to believe that Dims' policies actually mean anything.

Just like Democrats finding a "middle ground" on abortion - it's impossible. You're either for infanticide or against it.

Funny, but I recall the Dems vociferously complaining that 80% of the Iraqi people do not want our troops in their country. Now they are saying we need to have a policy which spurs the Iraqis into working harder to establish a Gov, Military, and police that can allow us to leave. Which is it? Do the Iraqis want us in or out?

Funny, but I've never viewed the difference between right and wrong, or good and evil, as a "delicate balance."

What "journos"? More like Dem hacks.

There is no "delicate balance", its aiding and abetting, a deliberate sabotage of the war effort and the smearing of US troops on the ground.

Propaganda.

I think the Dem's are gonna get blindsided by and lose on...immigration this fall. They are banking that no legislation passed on this will hurt the GOP. In that, they just don't get it.

Excellent observation, and one with which the media will NEVER EVER confront Murtha or Kerry.

But liberals and antiwar activists will lean toward an alternative amendment offered by Democrats Kerry (Mass.), Barbara Boxer (Calif.) and Russell Feingold (Wis.). It would direct the administration to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq by July 1, 2007. The only personnel allowed to remain beyond that date would be those "essential to completing the mission of standing up Iraqi security forces, conducting targeted counter-terrorist operations and protecting U.S. personnel and facilities."

Uh...doesn't that cover just about everybody currently there? "Bring home the Seabees" isn't exactly the stuff of a winning political campaign...

The rabid foaming at the mouth anti-war left-wing radicals who now run the dem party will not stand for a "safe" position on Iraq (click the links below), they want an immediate Jack Murtha style retreat.

Once again, Democrats have a hard time understanding what "compromise" really means. And so they try to come up with a solution that will please everyone.

In the process of course, they will continue to tick everyone off.

We are blessed to have such opponents.
