Hollywood megastar Angelina Jolie indirectly criticized the Iraq war and the priorities of the US government, in an interview with CNN on World Refugee Day.
"When you're in Washington to get money for AIDS orphans, the answer is often, we're at war right now," said the goodwill ambassador for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) who has visited refugee camps around the world.
"Our priorities are quite strange," she said referring to the money Washington spends on war and not "dealing with situations that could end up in conflict if left unassisted, and then cost more."
"We're missing a lot of opportunities (to do) a lot of good that America used to do and has a history of doing ... You have to start to notice that there's something wrong with that," she added.
Jolie, 31, spoke during her two-hour interview of her travels around the world and how on seeing young victims of atrocities a few years ago at a refugee camp in Sierra Leone it had changed her life.
"It was an amputee camp ... the worst camp I've ever seen ... It changed me for the better ... Suddenly you see these people who're really fighting something, who are really surviving, who have so much in pain and loss ... and you just feel like your own life just has been so sheltered and so spoiled... it just changed everything."
She defended the United Nations from criticism: "We certainly hear a lot about the negative things about the UN, you don't hear about the number of people who are kept alive on a daily basis by the UN.
"It's the closest thing we've got to a real international institution that represents us and can make certain kind of decisions. There's just a lot that people don't know about the UN and what it does."
Jolie, who avoided speaking of her personal life in the interview, said she got a "ridiculous" salary for her acting job, but revealed she donated a third of what she makes to humanitarian causes.
It was during the shooting in 2005 of "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" that Jolie and fellow superstar Brad Pitt struck up a relationship. Jolie gave birth to their daughter, Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, in Namibia on May 27.
Pitt has also adopted two children Jolie had adopted, five-year-old Maddox from Cambodia and 18-month-old Zahara from Ethiopia.
During her interview, Jolie revealed that she and Pitt intend to adopt another child soon, although they had yet to settle on a nationality.
I am so tired of hearing about the two of them and their kids...as if they are the only ones who have children or adopted children from poor countries. As soon as I saw her mug on CNN, I changed channels. I believe others should do the same. And this applies to the Dixie Chicks as well. The less we pay attention to these people, the less we will eventually hear from and about them.
*YAWN*
The desire among Hollywoodians to provide unsolicited policy advice appears to reach a level of addiction among them comparable to their addiction to seducing other people's spouses or their love of cocaine.
Shut up and get your lips fixed.
What a idiot this woman really is, think of this the US gave more money last year for charity and disasters, over 200 billion and that does not even count what our country gave, what do these self confessed Hollywood liberals want???
I think only to get their faces on TV so we won't forget how good they are, it makes me PUKE.
Oh brother. angelina gonna run for president now is she???
Just shut up.
Hollywood megastar????......that's a hellava stretch...
I would hope that message is also followed by, "you see, there are these bad people in the world that don't especially like Americans, despite our generosity toward other nations. These bad people--why they attacked America in 2001, and nearly wrecked our economy and way of life in the fallout. In order to maintain our freedom, way of life, and ability to be generous to other nations--yes, we had to go and fight these bad people. So yes, Ms. Jolie--we're at war right now."
Hollywood megastar... But only in profile.
That claim is so idiotic on so many levels.
I know - she's no megastar! So far all of her movies pretty much bombed at the box office except Mr. and Mrs. Smith and that's mostly because Brad Pitt was in the movie. She's no great actress!
Did she even reference what President Bush has done for people around the world with AIDS.
No one has even contemplated let alone committed to such a principle.
And I respect the President highly for this decent act.
He's a damn good man.
What's wrong with her? The US can not fix every global problem.
One good thing Brad said was that the Twin Towers should be rebuilt again. They should go back up for many different reasons, eve if they were just giant tombstones with all the names of the dead on them, with a warning that if anyone dares ruining them again....
*sigh*
One more actress I'll never rent again. The list is getting rather long at this point.
There must be something in the air in hollywood that makes you hate america. My wife and i give alot to charity but we dont advertise it everyday. i hate people who do that
Even BONO and Bob Geldorf complemented Bush on the amount of AID the U.S. has sent under his leadership - even more than when Bill Clinton was in office. Apparently this woman has the attention span of a moth!
What is with her lips?
Yet another arm-chair expert in world affairs. Be still my heart.
