US forces had been on the trail of Mansur al-Mashhadani, identified as the top al-Qaeda religious leader in the country, before he was killed in the Yusufiya area just south of Baghdad, said Major General William Caldwell. Mashhadani was one of the top five al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders and close to its mastermind Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who was also killed by a US air strike on June 7.
"He was a right-hand man to Zarqawi," Gen. Caldwell said.
US forces had spotted Mashhadani and two other militants in a car in the Yusufiya area south of Baghdad.
His vehicle was destroyed from the air as he tried to get away.

A group affiliated with al-Qaeda said it had abducted the soldiers but Gen. Caldwell dismissed the claim, saying the military had no evidence to suggest that.
Mashhadani had previously been captured by US troops and then released in 2004.
FYI
Great news!
(Another top al-Qaeda man killed - Mansur al-Mashhadani is DEAD in Iraq)
Freddy Mercury said it best, "Another One Bites the Dust"
Sounds like we might get some good AC-130 or Predator video out of this. They should start showing more video like in Gulf War I. Especially now.
I would bet this guy was there when the two soldiers were murdered and that was the car that dumped their bodies.
Man-Sewer?.. Sounds about right.
My bad. I should read the article first. He was killed before the soldiers went missing.
How many right hands did that guy have?
I agree, and more before and after shots.
LOL! That was the first thing that crossed my mind!
I have been wondering about his name. If it is one of those surnames that means someone is from a certain village or region (Saddam is called Al-Tikriti, I think --- meaning he is from Tikrit) and what relationship he has to the Hammurabi guy who has the same name. Or maybe they are just from the same village or place.
Boy, that's what I was wondering. A right-handed hydra. Every other day, we hear about "another one" and then "another one."
As long as they're obituaries, that's OK.
One thing for certain, you never want to be the left hand man in an Arab world.
Good work! That stupid Jane Harmon - congresscritter from CA - may whine that "whack-a-mole" isn't working with the terrorists, but it is. Prayers for our brave troops and their courageous families, and for the success of their mission.
Oh yeah baby ... we are kickin' serious posterior! ...
I'm with you.
