Congressional Democrats Pass GOP in Funds

Senate and House Democrats, optimistic about their election-year prospects, have more money in the bank for the midterm contests than their Republican counterparts.

Some four months before the voting, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has $33.5 million cash on hand compared to $18.3 million for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the groups said Tuesday. The Democrats raised $4.7 million in May; the Republicans collected $4.3 million in the month.

"Our fundraising success reflects a deep desire for change and recognition that the best way to get things back on track is by electing more Democrats to the Senate," said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D- N.Y., chairman of the Democratic committee.

Although the GOP committees trail in cash on hand, it has the advantage of the presidency and the fundraiser in chief as well as majority control of the House and Senate.

On Monday, Bush helped Republicans raise $27 million for the fall congressional contests, with $15 million for Senate candidates and $12 million for House candidates. The numbers will be reflected in the next filing. The president used the event to reassure Republicans that they will prevail in November.

"We're going to keep the House and we're going to keep the Senate thanks to all of you here," Bush said.

House Democrats said they had $24.5 million cash on hand after raising $5.5 million last month. House Republicans said they had $21.9 million at the end of May after collecting $5.6 million.

Yes it will, so really who is more dangerous to the integrity of the USA? The Socialist Libs or the GOP with a pro-illegal, open-border President whose new "border stooge" is promoting NO WALL ON THE BORDER....has Washington gone mad??

How many RAT Senators are up for re-election and how many Repubs?

Of course the rats have momentum going for them. My God, the left has bashed them for ages now, and their own party has turned on them. To all those who think illegal immigration is a new thing, just happening since Bush was elected, you have fallen into the trap set by the left. God help us is all I can say.

Hmmm. 18 RATS up for re-election and 15 Republicans.

That might explain a little of the disparity in fundraising. Maybe the Republicans are just late bloomers.

But the RNC has a lot more money than the DNC. Why is that left out of this article?

You know why. :-)

Interesting. The RATS have 3 open seats and Republicans have none.

When you consider that 99.9% of incumbents get re-elected, the RATS don't have much hope for taking the Senate. But if the Republicans can grab any of the open seats you will probably see even more RATS abandon their seats in 2008.

You have that right -- bashers must sit and wait for these type threads to be posted. Would love to know how much the DemocRATs raised illegally as it happens every cycle when they have to return money after it is already spent.

Down here in Florida we are hoping that Nelson loses his seat. He isnt real popular and there is a very good chance to get rid of him. If kathryn harris gets the nomination tho he will probably win. Too bad that RINO Martinez wasnt up for reelection i would love to get rid of him.

I think the distinction is that the article that started this thread was only about the relative cash positions of the two national Senatorial campaign committees. The headline referring to "Congressional Democrats" is misleading because the story doesn't say anything about the war chests of individual candidates (of either party).

It might be interesting to go around the country and add up the cash-on-hand for each major-party candidate in the 33 states with Senate races and in each of 435 Congressional districts. A dogged reporter could figure out which party's candidates, in the aggregate, have more money. That would be a lot of work, though. Isn't it more important to investigate whether Jennifer Anniston is pregnant?
