I wonder why the British government didn't snap up an ex-airline Airbus A340-200 and convert that into an executive plane. The shorter range plane would probably be an Airbus A319CJ, though.

Why would anyone want to operate one of those inneficient pieces of junk? A 777-200 has a lower carbon footprint.

<< ... merely metion (sic) that I believe that it was the post-war Atlee-let, (sic) Labor (sic) government that sent the engine to Comrade Stalin. >>

By the time the execrable Atlee came on the scene it was too late for once-great Britain's jet engine. The habitually drunk Mr Winston Churchill had long before [Effecticely] stolen the jet engine's design and patents from Frank Whittle -- and had given it away to the whole world.

Providing just another example of how the world's one-time most advanced aircraft industry was destroyed by generations of lumpen unionists, bureaucrats and by serially silly sozzelled sophist socialist politicians of varying degrees.

There are a number of options available. For short haul,Raytheon,Dassault,Bombardier & Embraer all offer customised solutions.Dassault & Embraer have been in the news for such planes recently. For longer-range,The A-340,Boeing BBJ & possibly B-777 are likely, though the BBJ is more likely .

The article states that 707 was the first jet liner. Is that true? I thought the Comet was the first.

One of the most beautiful planes ever. Too bad it killed so many.

Yes, the article is mistaken. The Comet went into and out of service before the 707 ever flew. Comets suffered metal fatigue failurs at the passenger windows that spread quickly through the whole fuselage in what amounted to an explosion in midair.

Quite a piece of history there. De Havilland designed these entirely by hand -- no computers.
